true but open source models are lagging vanguard models by only months. i think a crash will slow the pace of change considerably, but not take away what's here.

talking about how economic necessity drives people towards work with meaning and purpose is a bit rich for someone who has a one in a million job - a high paid cushy job with huge reach, aligned to her politics and with exemplary autonomy. system works for her!

the scenario she is addressing is one where productivity is redistributed through UBI. she believes that would be bad. freeing people from coercion into labour would make them meaningless. but why can't they do whatever work brings them purpose, on their own terms, freed of being a corporate slave?

kasparian outlines an opposition to AI due to it saving labour, thus reducing "meaning and purpose". while there are legit discussions on environment, distribution, corporate control etc, I think this intuition underpins much of the negative sentiment. very bad imo www.youtube.com/watch?v=S2YD...

Anyway I’ll stop derailing your thread. I do feel there’s some goalpost-moving in anti-AI args: it’s bad bc it’s totally dumb and useless; except when useful, then bad bc you should enjoy labour intrinsically; when really useful, it’s bad bc displacing workers; maybe so powerful as to destroy world

David Sligar @davidsligar.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
ok so you assessed your satisfaction with the task on an economic basis, rather than just intrinsic enjoyment. I think our positions are quite similar here!

This is a different use case to Bloom’s suggestion, which is self-directed review and critique. But your example nicely shows that you can dislike the work while still producing valuable output.
100
David Sligar @davidsligar.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
yeah tech change can be very bad for the displaced workers. But producing more output with fewer resources, and reallocating those resources to other production, is why we have vastly higher living standards than in 1700. We’ve even innovated a technology to support the displaced: the welfare state.

David Sligar @davidsligar.bsky.social · 21/09/2026
Being good at a job and making valuable contributions doesn’t mean personally enjoying every work process (very conservative view). Anyway Bloom’s point here isn’t even that reviewing is drudgery; it’s that AI review of your own work is very useful for identifying problems and improving its quality.

def. very popular for other uses also. I'm sceptical of takes that assess a new technology based on personal preferences, and then basically extrapolate from that that use by the masses must be dumb, they just don't know what's good for them...

as someone who has family in this age range, the only desperate one is the poorest, who can’t afford a house. the well off ones are having a great time boasting about how they’re going to upgrade to a very fancy house and not pay a dime of means testing tax

just means they put it all into larger and more desirable empty nest houses, squeezing and pushing out younger workers. on the other hand, those with below average savings can’t afford a house and pay. those who are very wealthy don’t worry about the pension anyway. very bad model.

personal finance column reminds that means testing is a tax that distorts behaviour - and the impact of the age pension cash assets test is unusually aggressive www.smh.com.au/money/super-...

🚨 New report from the Australian Institute of Health & Welfare on mortality rates of working-age welfare recipients between 2012-2022 makes for grim reading, could be hugely improved tomorrow by raising rates as per the Government's own committee. @aihw.bsky.social www.aihw.gov.au/reports/cent...
Key findings

Of the 287,000 people aged 22-64 who died over 2012-2022, almost 3 in 5 people received income support payments

Coronary heart disease was the leading cause of death among income support recipients

Income support recipients were overrepresented in deaths from suicide, accidental poisoning, and alcoholic liver disease

Mortality rates and leading causes of death differed depending on the type of payment received

these folks decide elections, and i would guarantee there’s quite a lot of them in normal juries in normal trials in normal places. unfortunately there’s no scope for calling the manager when they don’t model habermasian deliberative rationality as we would like

a lot of this sounds like middle-upper brow folks in fancy boston suburbs ganging up on someone who lacked skills at articulating and rationalising their views. reasonable doubt is in the eye of the beholder. people go by vibes. that’s just an inescapable part of both democracy and juries

Suspect it depends largely on how good they felt making the args, and budgetary/prioritisation/politics reasons linked it how much they want to go after someone (community anger) or feel they’ve got ego invested/sunk cost bias. Anyway, just formalise the not guilty decision.

Once a jury is deadlocked, a not-guilty verdict should require only a majority. If a majority of a jury of your peers believes there is reasonable doubt, there is reasonable doubt. The state should not be allowed to use its overwhelming power to repeatedly grind a defendant down with weak retrials.

It is easier for American liberals to accept that mental illness caused a mother to strangle her three children than that Tourette’s caused a man to involuntarily say the N-word.
