So what you're looking for is "cheating" .. not in a bad way though! When I was first playing doom as a (too young to be doing that) child, I couldn't beat the levels, but I was simply enchanted by just exploring the levels! Cheats are exactly for this purpose.

Recent realization: If you want to remove the swinginess of a single d20, you need to use more dice. 3d6 gives you a similar range with more distribution around 10~11. If you still want ~5% Critical Success or Failure: any time two 6s or two 1s show up, regardless of what the third die is.
