It's an abstraction, of course, but it makes it far easier to track than charting the cost of individual food items, water sources, booze, etc. while exploring an adventure site / traveling.

Yeah, in my homebrew ttrpg, I just have an all encompassing item called a 'meal' that covers all manner of food, water, comfort snacks, etc. Characters have to consume 1 'meal' per day or they can't heal from resting (and start to take damage via starvation after 3 in-game days.)

So, this is a standalone fantasy novel, my first since I started writing the Reynard books back in 2006 or so. After having spent so many years writing soft science fiction in fantasy clothing, I was kind of champing at the bit to do a piece revolving heavily around magic.
