Notably, documents filed in court showed Partey had claimed he had not been charged with any criminal charges in any country when applying to enter Canada before the tournament. Partey was previously asked by Canadian immigration officials to clarify the charges he was facing in the UK.The midfielder also said being unable to travel to Canada would “materially affect” Ghana’s ability to play in the tournament. “This is the first time that my country has qualified at the World Cup,” he also said in the affidavit. Ghana qualified for the previous tournament in Qatar, where Partey played in three games.

"I am sure Professor Tony Blair was not ready to address the line of global modernity and the British Empire's role in it. Often absent from class, he was on his own crusade in the Middle East, where he was part of a a special envoy of so-called peace mediators. (Though he admitted to us students that he could not accurately draw a map of Palestine and Israel.)"

interesting to revisit this part of The Waffle Manifesto (1969) in the current Canadian political moment...
The major threat to Canadian survival today is American control of the Canadian economy. The major issue of our times is not national unity but national survival, and the fundamental threat is external, not internal.

been thinking a lot about this passage from Shaul Magid’s book on Meir Kahane lately…
America was where Kahane made his mark, and he made quite a mark — more so, I suggest, than is usually recognized. His militancy has been largely rejected by the American Jewish establishment. Yet many of his basic precepts have been embraced among present-day American Jewry. This is an audacious claim, but I hope that after reading this book it will seem less provocative even if no less alarming. Kahane spoke of Jewish "survival" in a decade when Jewish liberals were still talking about acculturation. Kahane warned of the dangers of intermarriage long before the "intermarriage crisis" became standard fare in American Jewish circles. He was an "Israel right or wrong" advocate before AIPAC and before Israel became the civil religion of American Jewry. He decried the anti-Semitism on the left when most establishment figures were worried about anti-Semitism on the right. and he argued for a Jewish turn toward conservativism a full decade before the rise of neconservatism. Today much of mainstream American Jewry has become "survivavalist," even if we now prefer more genteel terms like "continuity."

love to just present claims as if they're objective facts
Few in the industry would dispute the merits of the case, nor these publishers’ essential need to protect their award-worthy I.P. At the same time, their legal battles with these A.I. firms seem to underscore an even graver threat: namely, the apparent dearth of any in-house innovation to capitalize on, or future-proof their businesses for, a fast-approaching era in which A.I. is likely to fundamentally alter the ways that news is both produced and consumed. Indeed, A.I. is about to become as integrated into our economy as software or mobile technology—its infinite applications and ubiquity are such that we will likely retire the term in a few years, much the same way we no longer bother to say digital. In a world where humans will become taskmasters, media leaders need to be as focused on incorporating the technology as they are intent on regulating its large language models. Lynch isn’t wrong, but the true existential threat hasn’t even arrived yet.

Journalists say and do lots of embarrassing things, but this will always be an all-timer!
As reporters, our job is to observe, not participate, and so to that end, I don’t belong to any political party, I don’t belong to any non-journalism organization, I don’t support any candidate, I don’t give money to interest groups and I don’t vote.
I try hard not to take strong positions on public issues even in private, much to the frustration of friends and family. For me, it’s easier to stay out of the fray if I never make up my mind, even in the privacy of the kitchen or the voting booth, that one candidate is better than another, that one side is right and the other wrong.

The thing about James Carville is that one never learns a new fact about him that makes him more appealing. It's all one-way traffic!
Despite the DLC’s embrace of elements of moderate conservatism, Democratic politicians in the South struggled to stave off a surging Republican Party. In Georgia, Miller faced a GOP that, for the first time in decades, had a chance of seizing the governorship. To win the 1990 election, he turned to the lottery, a tactic that had already proven effective in Kentucky. There, with the help of campaign adviser James Carville, businessman Wallace Wilkinson surged from an early deficit in the Kentucky Democratic primary to win the 1987 gubernatorial election, largely on the basis of his support for a lottery. Inspired by Wilkinson’s victory, Miller hired Carville for his 1990 campaign, hoping the lottery would prove equally effective in the Peach State.
