Even at 102 years old, Tony wasn’t quite finished with the Mustang, returning to the skies in a P-51 "Rosalie" in 2022. Tony passed away at the age of 105, leaving behind an incredible legacy in both military and civilian aviation.

After the war, his career in aviation continued for another 35 years at McDonnell Aircraft, where he eventually became Chief Engineer and contributed to aircraft including the F-4 Phantom and F/A-18 Hornet.

This weekend, we're flying in honor of 1st Lt. Thomas Anthony “Tony” Gibbons. A World War II fighter pilot with the 348th Fighter Group, Gibbons flew 126 combat missions in the Pacific at the controls of the P-47 Thunderbolt and P-51 Mustang.

The other Air Force Thunderbirds support team members shown are SSgt Justin Weidner and MSgt Eric Gordon. The Thunderbirds teams would not exist without the tireless effort of the maintenance and support teams that rally around them to keep the planes flying and manage the team logistics.

The 2026 Wings Over North Georgia Airshow in Rome, Georgia was a historic airshow. It was the first time that F-16s landed in Rome. This was made possible due to the runway expansion that allowed the Thunderbirds to stage at the airport rather than at Dobbins.

The Blue Angels Diamond Low-Break Cross is one of my favorite maneuvers. This maneuver starts from behind the crowd line. Because of this, you get a completely different perspective of this maneuver depending on where you are standing along the crowd line.

The Delta Flat Pass/Pitch-Up Break is the final maneuver of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels demonstration. It is quite special to see as each plane individually pitches up one at a time spacing themselves equally and positioning to land.

The golden sunset lighting just made things even better. This is why I have come to really prefer shows that have a twilight and night in the plan. Some P-51 Mustangs, a B-25, and a P-47 were just part of the great warbirds lineup.

When I saw it was coming again the second time, I had my wide lens ready and captured this first image with the Thunderbirds Diamond flying right over the F-100. This was kind of nostalgic to me given that the Thunderbirds flew the F-100 from 1956 to 1968.

I met a photographer that’s been photographing this specific plane for the past 15 years as the previous owner’s personal photographer. He told me has a book with tons of images from the 15 years he’s taken of this plane. I bet there are some interesting images in that book!

F-100 Super Sabre & Air Force Thunderbirds Diamond! This particular F-100 has a new owner and was originally planned to fly at the Terre Haute Air Show, but they don’t have a certified pilot yet, so it was just on static display.

They then pass in front of the crowd in tight echelon formation. While you are watching them pass to the right, the opposing solo comes screaming by from the left with the sneak pass.

One of the iconic maneuvers of the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds is the Echelon Pass in Review where the four diamond pilots swing in from the left in a stacked formation. This makes them appear as one plane during part of the pass from the perspective of the crowd.

The first time I saw Redline Air Shows was at SUN ‘n FUN in April of 2025. I have seen them several times since. It’s great seeing them every time. Ken and Austin Rieder do a fabulous job performing in their Van’s RV-8 experimental aircraft during the day as well as at night.

That was the case for a few passes during practice at the Terre Haute Airshow a few weeks ago. The last frame was with 5 planes, but I only had three in this frame, so that fit with my ‘three Thunderbirds’ theme for this post.
