The rise of “patriots-only” rule in Hong Kong is marked by arrests of opposition figures, the silencing of critical media, and a growing culture of surveillance and anonymous reporting. See the full 30 min doc here www.youtube.com/watch?v=lIDT...

Alan Yentob might be a strange person to be starstruck by, but I do remember the two times I saw him and I acted too "cool" to talk to him. Once, ambling through Soho, once sat in reception at the Beeb. He had a great influence on television and British culture. May he rest in peace.

Very sad to hear that my good friend Alan Yentob has died. He was such excellent company, and a wonderful interviewer and documentary-maker. I shall miss him greatly.

Sports journalism can at times produce some wonderful writing. "A few months ago a photograph started doing the rounds online. It’s a screengrab from Google Street View, taken in Wythenshawe in 2009, showing an 11-year-old kid standing at the side of the road...

This obituary for the award-winning costume designer of Peaky Blinders, Stephanie Collie, is a wonderful tribute to her research process and skill. It’s easy to criticise costumes in TV historical dramas, but historical inaccuracies are rarely errors, they’re often storytelling choices

A great quote Michael Mann said to me about jump cuts “it only hurts for a second”. If you need to use a jump cut just remember there are a couple pretty egregious ones in the pilot of Tokyo Vice and you probably didn’t even notice them. It’s usually harder on the editor than the audience
