16 Feb 1917, the Lady Ann was torpedoed off Scarborough, sinking in 3 minutes. Fred Chater & Walter Gunn were buried at Dean Road Cemetery—an error led to Gunn being listed on the Tower Hill Memorial as "missing". Thanks to researcher Fred Fox, CWGC placed a headstone over Gunn’s grave. #WW1

On Wednesday I visited the graves of 2 sailors killed in the sinking of the Lady Ann. I've uploaded the photos of the graves. I'll undertake some further research & I'll post at a later date. But for now, read about the loss of the Lady Ann, whose wreck is now owned by the Scarborough Sub Aqua Club.

Heading to the British Society of Sports History conference at Edinburgh. I’m giving a paper on The Hull Handball League. Founded by a German Jewish GP who fled the Kristallnacht and a Dutch submariner. It lasted 6 years, but it had two divisions, a junior section and played international games.

I arrived at Scarborough station to find a crowd gathered around a charter train. I’m a similar age to the locomotive and it’s considered a classic. But like me it’s still working!

On Monday Scarborough Cricket Club is hosting an over 50s international between England and New Zealand. It is far from the first match featuring a touring side, in 1884 the Gentlemen of Philadelphia played at North Marine Road, the first-ever time a cricket team from the USA played in England.

Scarborough Cricket Club's secretary Robert Baker, whose gift to the club is the iconic pavilion, played in a game in 1868 against a touring Australian Aboriginal team at Castle Hill. I've updated the story of his life and greatest work accordingly.

Yorkshire dominated with the bat yesterday at North Marine Road. One of the county's greatest-ever batsmen was F.S. Jackson, in 1905 he stayed on Filey's Crescent whilst taking part in the famous Scarborough Cricket Festival.
