iran wants guarantees that it won't be attacked again. there seem to be only a few paths to that guarantee. ft link: www.ft.com/content/869f...
Iran views the conflict as an existential threat, is desperate to restore its deterrent and wants to ensure its foes are not willing to pay the price of future attacks, a person close to the regime, diplomats and experts said.

All this suggests it is digging in for a protracted war of attrition, they said, and will only stop if it receives guarantees as part of any ceasefire deal that the US and Israel will not resume attacks.

got damn read the whole interview but damn
Well, you know, I felt like I was a reporter.

I see.

You see what I mean?

Sure.

It's, like, would you do an interview with Melania or President Trump yourself? Probably yes. It doesn't mean that you think the same way or that you approve of him doing what he's doing.

You and I are two journalists talking, essentially.

Yeah. So, I mean, to me, the experience was about, yes, being a reporter—being a cinematographer in a documentary, and doing my best to make Melania look visually beautiful with the lighting.

One thing reporters try to do is to spotlight ideas or news stories, and what you're trying to do is spotlight her face and its beauty. I do see a real similarity there. You told the Times that Brett "made some mistakes." Has he told you that he made mistakes?

No. No. No. Isaac, no. All I'm saying is that I worked with him twelve hours, fifteen hours, a day, and then everybody went their own way. Our age difference is wide. I could be his father.

I read that Roman Polanski is a father figure to him. So that role might already be filled. There are a lot of people who feel affection for Brett.

Yeah, yeah. Because he's a good kid. [In 2007's Paris-based "Rush Hour 3," Ratner gave a cameo to Polanski, who had fled to France after being accused of anally and vaginally raping a thirteen-year-old. He was later accused of sexually assaulting other teen-agers, which be denies. In the cameo, Polanski has a comic scene where he prepares to do an anal-cavity search of Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker.]

The Times has you saying that he made some mistakes. That's what I was curious about.

What I'm saying is, he might've made some mistakes. I don't know. It's not like I was with him when he was interviewing actresses to do a movie or that kind of activity.

It's the same with Trump. A lot of accusations have been made against him, but neither you nor I were in the room. So who's to say, really?

baseball already has a system to reward loser owners who aren't willing to invest in their team. i'm supposed to believe that these are savvy owners who go to their station in life of owning a professional baseball team but don't know how to find liquidity in a forever appreciating asset?

Tucker, who turns 29 on Saturday, was considered the consensus top free agent this offseason. He turned down a qualifying offer from the Cubs, meaning they will receive a compensatory Draft pick. The Dodgers will lose their third- and sixth-highest selections in the upcoming Draft after already losing their second- and fifth-highest picks and $1 million from their international bonus pool as a penalty for signing closer Edwin Díaz earlier in the offseason.

Mookie Betts got to watch all three homers from the on-deck circle and all 10 strikeouts from shortstop. So I asked him how he would describe his reaction to what he saw.

“I don’t even know if I have one,” Betts said. “Just watch and enjoy it. That’s really all. I can tell my kids about how I got to play with Ohtani and play a long time with him. But, I mean, there’s just no more words you can really say for what he does.”

man died of an overly complicated invention but not before trying to kill the rest of us on a longer time horizon
• Thomas Midgley Jr. (1889-1944) was an American engineer and chemist who contracted polio at age 51, leaving him severely disabled. He devised an elaborate system of ropes and pulleys to help others lift him from bed. He became entangled in the ropes and died of strangulation at the age of 55. However, he is better known for two of his other inventions: the tetraethyl lead (TEL) additive to gasoline, and chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs). [41][42][43]

i love this because when i studied abroad ages ago and stayed with a well-to-do french family with two teens, my dinner with them on my first night in paris was a seafood tower and frites with copious amounts of mayo. nothing else.
Part of why this bite feels so out of place is that, while Chateau Royale is not by any stretch an inexpensive restaurant, it is also not an ostentatious or conceited one; it feels like the wrong setting for a dish so overtly sneering. In all other respects, Pruitt and his team seem to be working hard to create a warm, unintimidating experience: service is beautifully friendly, with waiters tour-guiding guests through the more highbrow aspects of the menu without an iota of condescension, and welcoming of hungry Francophiles of all levels of gastronomic expertise. [I had dinner one evening next to a family with two small children, who went wild on both oysters and French fries, to the delight of the entire dining room.] There's a dissonant note of another stripe on the menu downstairs, in the barroom, where the atmosphere

10. In this sense, it can be said that the commitment to the poor and to removing the social and structural causes of poverty has gained importance in recent decades, but it remains insufficient. This is also the case because our societies often favor criteria for orienting life and politics that are marked by numerous inequalities. As a result, the old forms of poverty that we have become aware of and are trying to combat are being joined by new ones, sometimes more subtle and dangerous. From this point of view, it is to be welcomed that the United Nations has made the eradication of poverty one of its Millennium Goals.

11. A concrete commitment to the poor must also be accompanied by a change in mentality that can have an impact at the cultural level. In fact, the illusion of happiness derived from a comfortable life pushes many people towards a vision of life centered on the accumulation of wealth and social success at all costs, even at the expense of others and by taking advantage of unjust social ideals and political-economic systems that favor the strongest. Thus, in a world where the poor are increasingly numerous, we paradoxically see the growth of a wealthy elite, living in a bubble of comfort and luxury, almost in another world compared to ordinary people. This means that a culture still persists — sometimes well disguised — that discards others without even realizing it and tolerates with indifference that millions of people die of hunger or survive in conditions unfit for human beings. A few years ago, the photo of a lifeless child lying on a Mediterranean beach caused an uproar; unfortunately, apart from some momentary outcry, similar events are becoming increasingly irrelevant and seen as marginal news items.

"Pope Francis, explaining his choice of that name, related how, after his election, a Cardinal friend of his embraced him, kissed him and told him: 'Do not forget the poor!'" www.vatican.va/content/leo-...
The cry of the poor
8. The passage of Sacred Scripture in which God reveals himself to Moses in the burning bush can serve as a constant starting-point for this effort.
There he says: "I have observed the misery of my people who are in Egypt; I have heard their cry on account of their taskmasters. Indeed, I know their sufferings, and I have come down to deliver them... So come, I will send you" (Ex 3:7-8,10). [Z] God thus shows his concern for the needs of the poor: "When the Israelites cried out to the Lord, he raised up for them a deliverer" (Judg 3:15). In hearing the cry of the poor, we are asked to enter into the heart of God, who is always concerned for the needs of his children, especially those in greatest need. If we remain unresponsive to that cry, the poor might well cry out to the Lord against us, and we would incur guilt (cf. Deut 15:9) and turn away from the very heart of God.
9. The condition of the poor is a cry that, throughout human history, constantly challenges our lives, societies, political and economic systems, and, not least, the Church. On the wounded faces of the poor, we see the suffering of the innocent and, therefore, the suffering of Christ himself. At the same time, we should perhaps speak more correctly of the many faces of the poor and of poverty, since it is a multifaceted phenomenon. In fact, there are many forms of poverty: the poverty of those who lack material means of subsistence, the poverty of those who are socially marginalized and lack the means to give voice to their dignity and abilities, moral and spiritual poverty, cultural poverty, the poverty of those who find themselves in a condition of personal or social weakness or fragility, the poverty of those who have no rights, no space, no freedom.

"... when Khalil said that he was honored to be standing with Mamdani, 'a man so principled that ICE hasn’t arrested him yet.' He paused and then, with perfect timing, added, 'You can tell they are thinking about it.'"
If you are not careful, and if you are not tapped into your own humanity and that of others, it can be tempting to mistake people for symbols. It is easy to affix a political prisoner to his political positions, or to the horrors of his detainment, and to see nothing else. The government sought to make an example of Mahmoud Khalil, to show others what happens when you are vocal about the rights of the Palestinian people. In many ways, this is how the state distorts the perspective of even the most well-meaning people: if what you understand about Khalil is that he has suffered, and you believe that his suffering is unjust, and your heart aches for his suffering, that ache may overwhelm your ability to understand him as anything else. Such shortsightedness isn’t nefarious, but it does make a fraction out of a full life. I love the Hadith about a collective body because it is not just about pain—it is about sharing the full spectrum of human feeling. I am not drawn to action only because people have suffered or are suffering; I am drawn to action because I am distinctly aware of every inch of humanity from which suffering keeps people.

they are shutting shit down and cherry-picking already. now what chucky? defector.com/this-is-uvalde
The horror of Uvalde was that the people who did nothing were there in uniform. Their cowardice was not just the sum of their individual moral weakness, but of what they had been organized into, supposedly on the public's behalf. With their badges and their guns, they were not simply people who were merely personally afraid to face the danger themselves, but who would institutionally, forcibly interfere with other people who did want to face it.

Outside the secure perimeter, protesters have filled the streets and swarmed Tesla dealerships and national parks. Republicans are fleeing town-hall meetings to avoid angry constituents. Millions of people understand how urgently dangerous the moment is. None of the system's appointed leaders agree. After Uvalde, people talked and talked, in rage and disbelief, about what they would have done if only they'd been there. Here we all are. Now what?
