On the @prospectmagazine.co.uk website today I've reviewed the Turner Prize exhibition in Middlesbrough, perhaps one of the award's best showings in recent years: www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/culture/7508...

And the winner of the Turner Prize is…
Who knows? This uncategorisable award is always hard to predict—and this year’s selection includes more than one worthy winner

You better believe it: I'm dipping my toes into the cold, harsh waters of Substack. In my first piece here I talk about a recent trip to Charleston and what that made me think about the limits of the Bloomsbury Group's radicalism: theschoolofart.substack.com/p/gloomy-abo...

A new exhibition of the artist’s work is a revelation. Could he have produced these paintings without his institutionalisation?

The summer issue of @prospectmagazine.co.uk is out now, and I've written the obituary for David Hockney, the most significant British painter of the past fifty years: www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/views/lives/...

I *loved* the Backrooms film – but it's also a curious example of how hard we find it to tell stories that involve or feature the internet, even when those stories are uniquely a product of it www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/culture/the-...

As has become traditional on polling day, here's my poem in the style of Philip Larkin on the small joys of UK democracy (and I know, I know, he might well have voted Reform)
The Polling Stations
'Yes, I suppose I ought to vote,'
I said, and at the local hall,
Manned by a woman in a coat,
Stub-scrawled my paper for us all.

The trestle tables, wooden booth,
And metal box to 'have your say'
In favour of some quarter-truth...
And yet it seemed a festive day.

Tomorrow, when the worded boards
Embarrass us like middle names,
The polling stations, and the wards,
Will fade away like playground games.

Lots of debate recently on the state of Scottish cultural life - with plenty of omissions. For me it all comes back to the bigger (older) challenge of accommodating an avant-garde in a small country. Some provocative lessons from IHF here: www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/culture/art/...

My latest for @prospectmagazine.co.uk – on assessing Jack Vettriano's legacy as perhaps one of the best bad artists there ever was:

Jack Vettriano’s art was bad, but that’s a good thing
Art critics loved to hate the late Scottish artist. But in their haste to pan him, they avoided some of the thornier questions his work presents
