@futurebird For some reason that brings to mind this song to me … Excursion Around the Bay - Great Big Sea m.youtube.com/watch?v=7IQwX8y2K3A
Lyrics for the song:
Well, it was on this Monday morning And the day be calm and fine To the Harbour Grace excursion With the boys to have a time And just before the sailor Took the gangway from the pier I saw some fella haul me wife Aboard as a volunteer Oh me, oh my, I heard me old wife cry Oh me, oh my, I think I'm gonna die Oh me, oh my, I heard me old wife say "I wish I'd never taken this excursion around the bay" We had full three hundred souls aboard Oh what a splendid sight Dressed all in regimental To make our spirits bright And meself being in the double When a funny things they'd say They choke themselves from laughing When they'd see us in the bay Oh me, oh my, I heard me old wife cry Oh me, oh my, I think I'm gonna die Oh me, oh my, heard me old wife say "I wish I'd never taken this excursion around the bay" My wife she got no better She turned a sickly green I fed her cake and candy Fat pork and kerosene Castor oil and sugar of candy I rubbed pure oil on her face And I said she'll be a dandy When we reaches Harbour Grace Oh me, oh my, I heard me old wife cry Oh me, oh my, I think I'm gonna die Oh me, oh my, I heard me old wife say "I wish I'd never taken this excursion around the bay" My wife she got no better My wife me darling dear The screeches from her trolley You could hear in Carbonear I tried every place in Harbour Grace Tried every store and shop To get her something for a cure Or take her to the hopLyrics continued…
Oh me, oh my, I heard me old wife cry Oh me, oh my, I think I'm gonna die Oh me, oh my, I heard me old wife say "I wish I'd never taken this excursion around the bay" She died below the brandies As we were comin' back We buried her in the ocean Wrapped up in a Union Jack So now l am a single man In search of a pretty face And the woman that says she'll have me I'm off for Harbour Grace Oh me, oh my, I heard me old wife cry Oh me, oh my, I think I'm gonna die Oh me, oh my, I heard me old wife say "I wish I'd never taken this excursion around the bay" Hey!

A visitation of Cedar Waxwings, who are never seen alone in winter but travel by hundreds…
A snowy suburban backyard with a crab apple tree. At first glance, there are dozens of birds on the ground, but on closer inspection you can see that there are just as many in the crab apple tree. At this time of year they travel in large flocks (hundreds, sometimes more than a thousand) visiting crab apples, ash, and other fruit bearing trees.

March means winter marshes around here… #MarshMadness
A winter wetland in a small creek valley created by beavers.
In the foreground are a mix of deep snow and dry tall grasses. In the mid-ground ice with a thin layer of water on top. Into the distance is a collection of dead trees: standing trunks 20-30 feet tall with bare side branches, and roots in the flooded land.

Interesting story on Quirks and Quarks today about how pollutants like ozone interfere with chemical signalling especially between social insects like ants and bees. www.cbc.ca/radio/quirks/feb-14-elep… segment at 19 min #Ants #Bees […] [Original post on mstdn.ca]
Screenshot of segment description:

How insects deal with smog and microplastics can impact them and the environment
19:03 How insects deal with smog and microplastics can impact them and the environment A growing body of research is shedding light on some lesser-known ways that human activities are affecting the insects around us. Researchers studying ants in Germany found that air pollution damages the chemical cues that the insects use to communicate with each other. The team, led by Markus Knaden at the Max Planck Institute for Chemical Ecology, found that exposure to ozone, the main ingredient in smog from fossil-fuel emissions, led these ecological engineers to attack their nestmates or neglect their young, depending on the species. The research was published in the journal PNAS.

In a separate study, researchers at Carleton University revealed that crickets will happily munch away on microplastics, but poop them out as nanoplastics which can spread farther in the environment. The team, including PhD student Marshall Ritchie, found that crickets would continue to eat larger microplastic pieces as they grew, and unlike other insects, the plastic didn't appear to stunt their growth. The research was published in the journal Environmental Science & Technology.

Visited again yesterday by our local flock of partridges, but this time on a thin layer of fresh snow I love that their tracks are like little arrows trailing over the landscape, like on a secret treasure map, but pointing backward… to confuse the predators? #birds #partridge #WinterTracks #yeg
A line of many tracks in a thin layer of undisturbed snow on a stone patio. Each footprint is three diverging lines, the centre one 2 to 3 times longer than the sides. They look like a cloud of little wayfaring arrows printed on the land, all urging us in the same direction.

[This series of images is quite legitimately terrifying to me. Before and after MAGA women images…] from @volts.wtf
A series of before and after images of leading MAGA women. The before pictures are of women who have carefully done hair and make up, but a sense of their spirit and individuality comes through. In the after pictures hugely plumped lips, enhanced cheekbones, hollowed out cheeks and deeply shadowed eyes create an awful and deformed grimacing uniformity that fully masks any spark of the person that once was.More of the same.

Nicholaides sure is peeved and has a *lot* of complaints against the very legislation *his* party and *his* government passed, and that *he himself* votes for! Mr. Nicholaides: if this legislation is so flawed, why did you vote for it? #ABPoli #Recall #Nicholaides
Letter on official letterhead from Dimitrios Nocholaides:

LEGISLATIVE ASSEMBLY ALBERTA
Demetrios Nicolaides, PhD, ECA Member of the Legislative Assembly of Alberta Calgary-Bow

Dear neighbours,

On October 23, 2025, a recall petition was filed and approved by Elections Alberta. Under the Recall Act, 2021, residents of a constituency can recall their MLA if they are dissatisfied with his/her performance as an elected official. It is my view, based on the reasoning provided in their application, and my previous interactions with them, that the petitioner is using the recall process to influence government policy and not because she has any legitimate concerns regarding my conduct as your MLA. The applicant alleges, in her official statement filed with Elections Alberta (available online) that I have "failed to support public education," that I am attempting to privatize education and that I "continue to dismiss Alberta's role in promoting fossil fuel disinformation in schools across the country." In a recent interview, the petitioner talked about ongoing provincial policy discussions regarding the creation of an Alberta Pension Plan, an Alberta Police Force, healthcare reform and further commented that the government must be stopped.

…continued in next imagepage one cont…

Clearly, this recall is a question of government policy and priorities, and not about my performance as your elected representative. There has not been a single mention or suggestion of any ethical violation, misconduct, or negligence. There is no claim that I am unable to represent your views in the Legislature or carry out the functions of my elected office. This recall is clearly an attempt to trigger a new election because of policy and political differences, effectively seeking to subvert the democratic mandate you gave me just two years ago. In 2019, when then-UCP leader Jason Kenney campaigned on the idea of recall, he noted that it should be an "instrument of accountability" if elected officials "totally violate the trust of voters."

Legislature Office 403 Legislature Building 10800-97 Avenue NW, Edmonton, Alberta, T5K 1B6 Phone: 780.427.5777 Constituency Office #2214, 8561 8A Ave SW Calgary, AB, T3HOV5 Phone: 403.216.5400 Email: calgary.bow@assembly.ab.capage two…

In 2023, I was duly re-elected as your representative with 49.7% of the popular vote, in an open, fair, and transparent election, giving me a clear mandate to represent you in the Legislature and implement the policies and priorities of the United Conservative Party. Our Westminster democracy provides regular opportunity, every four years, for citizens to re- evaluate their options and make a different decision if they desire. That is the proper venue for debating and deciding policy direction and provincial priorities. I am a firm believer in recall, when used appropriately and for the right reasons. If a member has engaged in illegal or unethical conduct, or demonstrably failed to perform the basic duties of their office, indeed, they should be recalled. If I have acted in an unethical manner or engaged in any misconduct, I would have no objections to a recall against me. However, I believe I have always acted professionally, respectfully, and with your best interests at heart. I recognize that many of you did not support the UCP's priorities and policies in the last election, but I will always do my best to listen to your views and concerns with humility.

page 2 continued in next image…page two continued…

I will, of course, respect the views of my constituents as expressed through any democratic means, including through a successful recall. I remain committed to the mandate you gave me, and I will always listen to different ideas to ensure I am in the best possible position to represent your views in the Legislature, as I have done with the recall petitioner herself, in person and via email. In closing, I commit to serve every resident of this constituency with dignity, respects and integrity.

Wyant says he found no evidence of wrongdoing on the part of Smith, her ministers or other political staff. But he wrote that the limited powers afforded to him mean he can't make any definitive statements. "That only means that I found no evidence of such," he says. "I can only make conclusions based on the documents I was able to review and the people I interviewed." Because the investigation was not a public inquiry, Wyant says some individuals refused interviews and avoided answering certain questions. "Because there was not the kind of vigorous examination and cross-examination that would take place in a formal setting, I could not come to conclusions on the credibility of information provided verbally by interviewees."

You just use your own research? I would hope to never be that lazy. You think that the fact that you don't know means nobody does? I would hope to never be that close-minded.

You not believing it doesn't make it true. You not understanding it doesn't mean it isn't understood. Your ignorance give you no authority. Your skepticism doesn't make you wise.

Stay in the matrix of your own ignorance if you want; live in your fever dream of superiority with your coterie of proudly ignorant friends; live in a simplified illusion where you already have it all figured out, which gives you an illusion of knowledge and safety even while you're being consumed by those who made the illusion for you.

Three images in a row.

First, labelled “this morning”:
A freshly painted zebra stripe crosswalk at a newly paved road and sidewalk

Next, labelled “this afternoon”:
Three people a busily scribbling red sidewalk chalk all over one of the black stripes in the crosswalk. Behind them, small pride flags have been stuck in the grass along the sidewalk and road.

Last, labelled “after!”:
A man takes a proud selfie with the crosswalk behind him. All the black stripes have been chalked into a pride rainbow.

Spread out in a line is a group of partridges. One adult with a sleek grey chest and rusty patch and 9 fairly large juveniles that look a lot like sparrows that have grown ten times too large.
They are along the edge of a lawn under raspberry bushes, near a hanging bird feeder, with a perennial border on the left.

#BloomScrolling White Cockle
A spray of flat white flowers with five broad but thin petals that are deeply bisected giving a small but full and slightly frilly disk of clean white. They are held of on branching stalks with many flower buds. Behind each flower is an unusual bulge that looks like the petals are much longer but are ‘pursed’. This little balloon like structure is heavily veined in ruddy colours and looks soft, fuzzy, and hollow.

So… Edmonton is experiencing a mid-summer influenza outbreak? That’s… surprising. #Yeg #Flu
Wastewater levels for Edmonton from Oct 2023 to now (Aug 1) There is a strong spike through fall 2023 into 2024, then levels are lower, with a relatively mild flu season last year. Then there is a substantial spike right at the end reaching 3/4 the 2023 spike and still climbing.

@GottaLaff 147 of 193 UN member states have recognized Palestine, at this point we are among the last, slow recalcitrant nations, that happens to comprise most of the “west”
A map showing countries that have recognized Palestine in green. The map is predominantly green.
