A quite tidy encampment site on a gravelled area under a spruce tree. A bright orange traps is folded and hanging neatly from a fence. There are a number of items - a bedroll and backpacks - put together in a tidy collection to the side. Everything looks clean and cared for to my eye, much like when my camping family is setting or breaking camp.

In my life I've sought out teachers who help me understand how to live in this truth.

And it strikes me that the first person who taught me that might have been Sinead O'Connor, who once said "It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society." It's a quote that's being attributed to her, though a bit of digging tells me that she herself was quoting Jiddu Krishnamurti, and reading about him makes me think I ought to read even more about him. So it seems even teachers have teachers, which strikes me as a comforting thought.

This morning I'm sitting in appreciation for our teachers, especially our early teachers, and offering a farewell to a great one, who deserved much more than she got, and got much that she never deserved.

She did well for as long as she could, and now she is gone.

She will be remembered. She will be missed.

@DemocracyMattersALot “I would just like to put it out there that people who say “bad guys” should not be in charge of anything other than their own action figures.” Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum’s words deserve to be seen and ridiculed in full… #USPol #Police
wonkette.com

As Judd Legum at Popular Information notes, after Trump initially changed the rule, he got heaps of praise from Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum, who was just so goll darn happy that police officers could once again have "so much fun" chasing the "bad guys" who, um, need to get a tail light replaced or something.

During a Cabinet meeting, he said:
<extended quote>
"On a lighter note for everybody here, one of the rules that under President Trump we were able to change for the US Park Police was they could do a pursuit. I was shocked to find out when we were talking to him, like, 'Oh, you pull somebody over and they just drive away and you can't pursue them. I mean, like - and they said, 'no, we can't? I said, 'Oh, rules' — we got that rule changed in 24 hours because of President Trump's leadership. The next night, they had so much fun. They pulled people over, they started to take off, they chased them, they stopped them. And then the bad guys, some of these guys were in cars that had stolen plates. So they'd take the plate off, they steal them off somebody else's car. They know the plate doesn't match, they know they're doing something. The bad guys in the car said you're not supposed to chase us, like, you're breaking the rules. The bad guys are telling us to — 'No, no, we're back in action? So it's like — and so the morale is high. They all wanted to say 'thank you' to you."
<end quote>

I would just like to put it out there that people who say "bad guys" should not be in charge of anything other than their own action figures.

Cow-culation: Reentry Impact Risk to Livestock in the Satellite Megaconstellation Era

Submitted to Acta Prima Aprilia

ABSTRACT

The commercial space industry is launching more satellites into Low Earth Orbit every year. Aotearoa New Zealand (NZ) has a thriving dairy and cattle industry. Unfortunately, these indus- tries could come into (high speed) cow-llision, as the rapid launch rate and short operational lifetimes of satellites in megaconstellations like Starlink result in a high reentry rate at NZ's latitudes. This could intersect with NZ's famously large population of livestock. We predict this will be an udder disaster for any cows that are hit, as they are squishy and moo-ve much more slowly than space debris. Using a global bovine density dataset, previously published satellite casualty probability code, and a complete lack of funding to do this calculation carefully enough for submission to a peer-reviewed journal, we calculate a ~ 0.3-1% chance of a cow-sualty in NZ from reentering Starlink Gen2 debris over the next 5 years.From the end of the article:

ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

This work received no financial support, although we wish it did. The existence of this paper was powered by New Zealand cheese. We thank David Hood for help understanding Stats NZ data, and Ewan Wright and Aaron Boley for their reentry casualty probability code. We thank our families for putting up with us writing this in our spare time and putting up with our udderly baaaaad livestock puns. The following individuals contributed to increasing the agricultural pun density of this work: A. Bongarzone, R. Dorsey, J. Forbes, M. Hopkins, F. and S. Lawler, B. Leicester, and E. Wright.

Lastly, we'd like to dedicate this paper to Michael JasonSmith (1977-2 March 2026), who would have been both exasperated by the way we have cludged the cow code documentation, and delighted by the existence of a punny paper about the possible effects of poorly planned space infrastructure on NZ livestock.

In an otherwise undisturbed field of snow: A deep but small hole - about 3 inches across - is surrounded the marks of wing feathers more than a foot away on each side. Another similar set of marks can be seen in the background. It is the sign of an owl that has dived feet first to penetrate the snow to grab a vole while braking its fall with a strong beat of their wings.

An official looking plaque mounted at an entrance, text reads:

A REPOSITORY FOR CANADIAN CULTURE

Only a few years after the territory's union with the United States, Canadian culture, such as it was, faced extinction. The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) began a campaign to catalog the remnants. Known as the Canadian Archival Network for Safeguarding Ancestral Voices and Evidence (CANSAVE), temporary outposts were set up across the state to gather relevant artifacts, texts, footage, and testimonies. All of these materials were carefully inventoried before being sent to WELDON.

Today, WELDON serves an important role as both a repository and an exhibition space, presenting ethnographic displays, screenings, and talks. Among the holdings that can be found in the CANSAVE Wing: an assortment of hockey crotica, ten issues of Chatelaine magazine, a selection of institutional apology statements, several of former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Halloween costumes, and audio samples of regional pronunciations of "about."
