Can I ask two questions 1. Salem case is sub judicy. I understand that, but howarth an Oxford don who is also involved in this shit .pleaded guilty and got a suspended sentence. Why isn't the press talking about this individual 2. Why did the arday coverage get more than the orr case

My column in this month’s Byline Times is part-obituary for my grandfather and part-comparison with Rupert Murdoch, who was born 6 months before him and is sadly still with us. You can subscribe to Byline Times for £3.75/ month. subscribe.bylinetimes.com

" Wonder What It Is About the Billionaire Media Tycoon
That Has Kept Him So Appealing All These Years?'
M
y grandfather, Gordon Briggs, died on 18 September 2026. He was two days away from turning 95.
On the day he was born, the Government abandoned the gold standard. The front page of the Observer didn't carry any headlines but was instead filled with adverts for holidays, hotels, and cruises: "This winter visit Gibraltar and Malta where British currency circulates!"
News moved slower then, but it got faster and faster every year that he lived.
Gordon was four when the BBC first broadcast a regular TV service from Alexandra Palace in London. It only went on air for two hours a day, and it wouldn't be until well after the war that the Briggs family owned a television.
My grandfather was seven when the Daily Telegraph's young foreign correspondent, Clare Hollingworth, broke the news of the German invasion of Poland after spotting "scores, if not hundreds, of tanks lined up ready to go [on the border]". The paper had no bylines then so her front-page scoop was credited to 'Our Own Correspondent' By the time the Daily Mail declared
"VE Day - It's All Over" on its front page.
Gordon was 13. The men who controlled the British media then were the BBC
Director-General, Sir William Haley, and an unruly gang of titled and entitled press barons.
Lord Beaverbrook owned the Daily Express, Sunday Express, and Evening Standard. Lord Kemsley presided over The Sunday Times, the Daily Sketch, and an empire of local titles. Kemsley's brother Lord Camrose had the Daily Telegraph.
Lord Rothermere - second of his name - was proprietor of the Daily Mail, Sunday Dispatch, and Evening News. Brendan Bracken, a Churchill ally, purchased the Financial Times. The Astors owned The Times. And the Carr family ran the News of the World.
The (Manchester) Guardian, along with the Manchester Evening News, were already overseen by the Scott Trust, which had been set up in 1936. The Daily Mi…Later that year, Murdoch bought The Sun, transforming it from a struggling left-wing broadsheet into the tabloid tyro that dominated the 70s and 80s, bankrolled his expansion into America, and funded the creation of Fox News.
While Murdoch was a master of the front pages, Gordon only appeared on them once - with his head streaming blood and his helmet knocked off during the Grunwick dispute. It's photographic evidence that he was on the wrong side of history - part of the state's efforts to illegally break the strike.
In 1981, the year Rupert and Gordon turned 50, the former acquired The Times and Sunday Times - a present enabled by Margaret Thatcher who gave the gift of relaxed regulatory scrutiny in return for slavish support.
My grandfather was among those who cast his vote for Thatcher in the 1983
General Election.
My dad was one of the sailors sent to the Falklands in the 1982 defence of those islands. He was 25 when Murdoch's Sun celebrated the sinking of the Belgrano and 323 deaths with a ghoulish front-page cry of "Gotcha".
In the year I was born - 1984 -
Murdoch made his move into film and
TV in the United States, beginning his acquisition of 20th Century Fox, having failed to buy Warner.
While Rupert was putting his foot down in the creation of a media empire, Gordon was already retired, four years into a 46-year defeat of the police pensions system. He was still on his first - and only - marriage to my grandmother, Christine.
Murdoch was on his second to Anna Torv, which lasted 32 years - but he has been married three times since: to Wendi Deng in 1999 (divorced 2013).
Jerry Hall in 2016 (divorced 2022), and Elena Zhukova in 2024.
I wonder what it is about the
billionaire media tycoon that has kept him so appealing all these years?
'Sun King' and a Sunset In 1996, the year Rupert and Gordon reached state pension age, Murdoch launched Fox News. Andrew Neil, who edited The Sunday Times for 1l years, wrote for Vanity Fair at the time that

They have been very quiet about other oxbridge professors such as salem, howarth, and orr. Not 300 articles on those people . But I suppose peodophilia and corruption is far less important than bragging about the marathons you do

Ita not looney left to think the iran war was a shit storm , that its wrong for the US to threaten NATO allies, that public streaming of an execution is a dystopian running man nightmare , that supporting Ukraine is correct or saying malthusiam billionaires should not run the world

David Lyall @davidlyall.bsky.social · 15/10/2026
suppose jk loves the ending of inheritance tax and cuts in taxes for the very rich

David Lyall @davidlyall.bsky.social · 15/10/2026
What do they make you a social democrat . I didn't see many moderates at tommy robinson rallys or at the Conservative conferancd . Badrnoch has expelled all her decent pro European one nation tories.
020
David Lyall @davidlyall.bsky.social · 15/10/2026
Well the Overton window has shifted then . Its not looney left to want social democracy , closer links to Europe, not attack immigrants not to see genocide. get people out poverty , not cut inheritance and taxes for the very rich . All badenoch ideas are hard right . Nothing to with the looney ledt

I thonk she us not just on trans but on isreal, trump , badenoch and many social issues She is the poster girl of the hard right in this country . Just read spiked , mail , telegraph, express, gb news , talk radio, reform and bard right tory mps

David Lyall @davidlyall.bsky.social · 15/10/2026
Very quiet on orr, howarth, ans salem and the critic . Helen, like most conservatives, went hard on the harmless arday . Nothing from you lot on these scandals.
000
David Lyall @davidlyall.bsky.social · 15/10/2026
Brilliant article . Badenoch is like corbyn she wants a hard right purity . Hence getting of moderate one nation tories
000
David Lyall @davidlyall.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
Johnson or cleverly would be polling in the 30s.Her idea to get rid of one nation tories is ridiculous..For the tory party to win you need a broad church. Also the best Chancellor since the war clarke and best business secretary heseltine would be excluded from the oarty.Thatcher would not do that
010
David Lyall @davidlyall.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
I think that people of the right think she is better than any lefty. Remember this is a conservative country . Also her approval ratings are very low compared to say johnson. I do think of the tories had either ,
100
David Lyall @davidlyall.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
Also howarth has pleaded guilty . Another right wing prof who writes for right wing rags . That is not sub judicial. Yet silence from.the free press vultures who went for arday
000
David Lyall @davidlyall.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
On a unrelated topic Sarah ditum at the critic went hard on arday but silent on this prof.Same for sodha, lewis and many others who went two footed on arday . They have been very quiet on orr. So I expect the same on this issue. Same for journos at the spectator, mail, guardian and telegraph

David Lyall @davidlyall.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
Maybe geoff, but that brings in my mistrust of pundits into play, and her personal appeal is just not apparent. Also, apart from politicos who actually watch PMQs . You dont hear did you see that stunning number 5 question last night..

I think more like harrods woman

I was actually agreeing with you and just making an aside
010
David Lyall @davidlyall.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
She is stunningly bad, but for some reason, right-wing journalists such as sonia sodha think she is amazing . I just dont see it . I saw johnsons appeal but this kemi stuff .naaah
020
David Lyall @davidlyall.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
She is aggressive , too scripted and predictable. She is really bad when off script . I just think compared to johnston or Cameron or even may, she and is so one dimensional
100
David Lyall @davidlyall.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
The depiction of the muslim is pretty bad as well
100
David Lyall @davidlyall.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
Sorry compared to the over scripted and always aggressive badenoch its a refreshing change. Yes he talks like a normal person
000
David Lyall @davidlyall.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
I dont think badenoch is that good . She is always aggressive. Good orators mix it up with charm , humour and a bit of bite.
000
David Lyall @davidlyall.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
Is she. I tont think so

David Lyall @davidlyall.bsky.social · 14/10/2026
Also critic , telegraph and Spectator journalists . On a unrelated topic Sarah ditum at the critic went hard on arday . Be interesting the response of ditum , sodha , lewis and many others who were went two footed on arday . They have been very quiet on orr. So I expect the same on this issue
