I think we may need to start rethinking how we do graduate student recruitment and postdoc hiring. The current normal ways of doing this may benefit from adjusting our approach.

The big issue is that I don’t have time to set up an individual Zoom call with even a small fraction of the people who reach out this way. Many of them seem like potentially great scientists.

The reason is that I know that behind each email is a person trying/striving to find the next stage in their career. For many of them, English is not a first language and AI really helps to organize and write a clear email.

I have complicated feelings about this. Like pretty much all faculty, I have observed the same pattern, although I am still far from 20 emails a day requesting to join my lab. I still try to respond them as often as possible.

As is so often the case, I feel like Star Trek, and particularly The Next Generation, presents the best model for how humanity can coexist with AI systems. The Federation ship computers are basically more powerful versions of the LLMs we have today (give me a little rope here).

Appreciate the thread. I’ve been thinking about TNG a lot lately in this context. It is surprising though that given all of the computer’s capacity that it did not provide a proof for Fermat’s last theorem by the 24th century. www.forbes.com/sites/kevink...
