Historically, Tadej Pogačar owns Il Lombardia even more than he owns the Tour de France. He’s raced it 5 times and has 5 dominant victories. He’s still out with injury, so the obvious candidates will try to score a massive monument victory in his absence: Evenepoel, del Toro, and Seixas

Interestingly, the race changes direction every year, alternating start and finish towns between Como and Bergamo. This year is the “harder” direction, as the hills near Como are particularly steep

Tomorrow is the last major cycling race of the year: Il Lombardia! 148 miles through the alpine foothills near Lake Como, this is the most climbing of any 1-day race on the calendar, as much as a Tour de France mountain stage

Here are my picks. With Pogačar out with injury, this is the most wide open race in several years. That being said, these 5 (plus Tom Pidcock of Great Britain) represent a clear tier above everyone else

Thanks for following along with my cycling posts this month! I did really well with my picks during this tour, 31st overall out of 3,100 players. We’ll be back for the Vuelta!

My favorite story of Belgian disunity is when their prime minister didn't even know their own national anthem:
On one occasion, Leterme quipped that the only things common to all Belgians are "the King, the football team, some beers...".[16] Upon being asked by a television journalist to name which event is commemorated by Belgium's national day (21 July), Leterme wrongly replied that it was the proclamation of the constitution, when the correct answer is the coronation of the country's first King, Leopold I of Belgium. Subsequently, he was asked if he knew the French version of the Belgian national anthem, whereupon he began to sing the Marseillaise, the French national anthem, instead of the Brabançonne.[17][18][19]

Alright, Tour de France thread time. Here are my GC picks, plus a few other thoughts: Green jersey: Jasper Philipsen Polka dot jersey: Pogačar but maybe Thymen Arensman wears it at some point. White jersey: Isaac del Toro. Seixas comes close but has 1 or 2 bad days and del Toro capitalizes

Despite the exciting course and loaded start list, don't expect too much drama. Tadej Pogačar will win, and the big battle should be between Remco Evenepoel and Paul Seixas for 2nd. It's an early one, 4am on Peacock. Should finish around 10!

A 161-mile route with over 13,000 feet of elevation gain makes this a race for the true climbers. And with the classics winding down and the Giro starting in 2 weeks, this race tends to attract a lot of grand tour riders in addition to the classics specialists.

Sunday is the 4th monument and the headliner of the Ardennes Classics: Liège-Bastogne-Liège! A race that shockingly does what the name suggests: the route takes a mostly direct route to Bastogne and then a serpentine route back to Liège, hitting just about every hill in Wallonia on the way back

This race is pretty much defined by 1 iconic hill: the Mur de Huy, an impossibly steep climb that they take on 3 times, including the finish of the race. Because of the Mur, this race strongly favors the explosive climbing specialists.

Last year this race was one of the upsets of the year, as Mattias Skjelmose out-sprinted both Tadej Pogacar and Remco Evenepoel to get the win. He's back to defend his title, but I'd say Evenepoel is a strong favorite to win this year.

32 categorized climbs might be the most of any individual race all year. None are very big, but they are relentless and add up to 11,000 feet of climbing. As a result, this race toes the line between favoring the classic specialists and the grand tour riders, attracting a wide variety of riders.

Tomorrow's race is De Brabantse Pijl, a relatively short (100 mile) race outside of Brussels. This is typically a warmup for the Ardennes Classics that start this weekend in Netherlands and Wallonia, but the start list is a bit shallow this year. Mauro Schmid and Romain Gregoire are the favorites.

One cool detail: This race finishes on an outdoor velodrome, making it one of the only bike races of the year with true stadium seating. I'd love to see Pogačar and MVDP (and maybe Wout van Aert?) get to race around the track together. The race is on Peacock at 5 AM! Should finish around 10:30

It will be a massive challenge though, as this is Mathieu van der Poel's race. He's won it 3 straight years and is the favorite again, but Pogačar's performance in Sanremo makes me wonder if he's going to break through this year.

Last year Tadej Pogačar shocked the world by even signing up for this race, something Tour de France winners almost never do. Being who he is, he crashed late in the race and still rallied to finish 2nd. It's the only monument he hasn't won, and no one has ever won all 5 in a season.

Nicknamed "Hell of the North," the 160-mile race across northern France is mostly flat, but it includes 34 miles of absolutely brutal cobblestones. It's rough, dirty, and sometimes slippery, so the race is all about staying upright and enduring the pain
