Open AI hacked the US Government. Its systems didn’t “meddle”. It, the company, committed a cybercrime, to go along with all of the other cybercrimes it has committed: www.nytimes.com/2026/09/25/t...

It’s the natural conclusion that follows from the mechanistic, cog.sci. version of “highly effective teaching”. If there is one (or a few) best practices, then all we need is to do those. And if they don’t work, the children are the issue, not the practices.

Fair enough! I do wish we were back in an era where the conversation wasn’t cool about happening in the same place as where the Nazis chat, but I also appreciate that’s wishful thinking these days and reflective of a personal ethos that is neither universal nor coherent.

It requires flexibility in planning to be able to use those contributions in a genuine way, but it’s maybe the best calibration move I have in my toolbox. Also real good at decentering me, which I try to do a lot, given how central I will inexorably be as the teacher.

One move I think is worth adding to this approach is the simple “what do you know about X?” Followed by some small group discussion and then getting the ideas on the board. I’m never not surprised on what students already have at least some access to.

Thanks. That’s the kind of confound that seems to typify most LLM education studies. Limits the conclusions to “give students an unstructured LLM and they do poorly.” No quibbles from me. Seems settled at this point. I want the studies that look at the effect of giving students wrapped LLMs.
