Where is Trump's new America.gov getting its answers? Often it's from the government's well-established web portal, launched by Bill Clinton 26 years ago and maintained since by career federal workers. Credit where it's due.

NBC story: Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg says he's aware some people are using the term "pervert glasses" to refer to his company's line of smart glasses and told NBC News chief tech analyst Joanna Stern that he plans a counteroffensive highlighting how Meta tries to deter secret recordings."I've seen the campaign," he said, referring to the nickname. "Companies like ours, we both need to substantively do the right things - which I think, in this case, we are - and we need to make sure that we're talking about it so that people know what we stand for."

New from me: I tested the emergency phone number for companies developing AVs in Texas, and five of 17 didn't work.
NBC News article excerpt: Self-driving cars or trucks operating in Texas are supposed to have emergency phone numbers to call in case they go haywire. But in NBC News tests, some were unstaffed, disconnected or listed incorrectly.

Five of 17 companies that are working on self-driving cars or trucks in the state provided emergency numbers in their published “first responder interaction plans” that, when they were tested in late August, seemingly wouldn’t allow companies to immediately respond in emergencies.NBC News article excerpt: The five emergency lines failed in various ways. Two went to voicemail. A third rang without ever going to voicemail or anyone picking up. A fourth rang several times before a recorded message took over, saying: “I’m sorry, the person you are trying to reach has a voicemail box that has not been set up yet. Please try your call again later. Goodbye.” And on the fifth, a recorded message said: “Your call cannot be completed as dialed.”

The Tesla Cybercab re-routes around railroad crossings, according to a Reddit user
Reddit post heading: “Took my first cyber cab rides” Reddit user explains why his Tesla cyber cab took so long: The 1hr 6 mins was a combination of 5 o clock traffic + reroute to avoid train track. We ended up not wanting any of that so we changed destination mid right to be dropped off in a reasonable 10 minutes to a different brewery.

new from me
NBC News article excerpt:

The fire department in Austin, Texas, said Tuesday that it has concerns that Tesla’s new Cybercab could block city streets because the unusual self-driving car doesn’t have a steering wheel or other traditional human controls that firefighters would use to move it in an emergency.

“The lack of driver controls, (no ‘pedals’ or steering wheel) can be problematic,” the department told NBC News in a statement, five days after Tesla began putting the vehicle into service for the first time as part of an autonomous taxi fleet in Austin.

Really interested to see how this film lands
NBC article excerpt:

The logistics of the Telluride screening were highly unusual, with the festival keeping the title secret until the last possible moment, and requiring audience members to stow their phones in secure Yondr pouches to prevent their use during the screening and Q&A. As members of the press were filing into the theater, a representative for A24 handed them notebooks and pens.

Despite the secrecy, rumors of the project began to percolate at the festival over the weekend, and the line to see the film in the 650-seat Werner Herzog Theater started forming hours before showtime.

Here you go
Tesla is not the first company to deploy an autonomous vehicle without a steering wheel. Zoox, a division of Amazon, carries passengers in Las Vegas and San Francisco in a purpose-built robotaxi that does not have mechanisms for human control, and it has federal safety regulators’ approval to do so.

In its first-responder plan filed with Texas officials, Zoox says it has remote employees who are available by phone to first responders to try to troubleshoot problems, but it says it “does not remotely drive the vehicle” and can only give the vehicle’s software limited guidance, such as whether it’s safe to proceed or whether to pull over.

“If the robotaxi cannot be moved using its own power, the robotaxi must be towed,” Zoox says.

Zoox did not respond Friday to a request for additional information, such as how often its vehicles have been towed. In limited situations where an employee has direct line of sight with a vehicle, Zoox can also drive its cars with a handheld controller, according to a filing this year from federal safety regulators.

But also it might shock you if you push it
NBC story excerpt: The plan warns that pushing a Cybercab when it is not in neutral or tow mode “can result in overheating the motor and potential risk of shock if electrical components are exposed.” It also warns that the car’s parking brake engages automatically if it is rolled faster than 5 mph or if its low-voltage battery runs down.

Tesla has told first responders that they might need to “push” the new Cybercab out of the way in an emergency
Opening paragraph of an NBC News story: Tesla's new Cybercab may need a "push" from first responders if it stalls on the road because the vehicle has no steering wheel or pedals that would let an officer drive it out of the way, according to a safety plan filed with Texas officials.

Oh yeah, this is also affecting Uber
NBC News excerpt:

Some Uber drivers using Tesla vehicles have fallen asleep while working. Three times this year, Uber passengers have recorded their drivers appearing to slumber behind the wheel in Tesla cars, according to videos that the passengers shared on social media or with local news outlets. Following outreach from NBC News, Uber said it deactivated two of the drivers from its app and is still seeking information about the third.

“This is not the experience we want riders to have, and we take reports of unsafe driving seriously,” Uber said. “Drivers are expected to remain alert, engaged, and in control of the vehicle at all times.”

Police say they have chased down sleeping Tesla drivers. A pursuit in California in 2018 lasted about 7 miles before the highway patrol brought a Tesla to a stop by slowing down in front of it. German police said they had one in 2022 that lasted 15 minutes before the driver woke up and followed instructions to pull over. A third in North Carolina in 2024 lasted only a mile.

He used the word “robot” to refer to his Tesla. The trip is about 1,700 miles round trip across three states.

“I fell asleep several times with my kids in the car,” Scoble wrote. After some of his 600,000 followers on X expressed alarm at his driving habits, he tried to reassure them, writing, “If you own a robot, falling asleep is not a big deal.”

Some Tesla drivers are becoming more brazen about napping behind the wheel
Excerpt from NBC News story: That hasn’t stopped some Tesla drivers, and the practice appears to be spreading. NBC News identified 43 videos that appear to show people asleep in the driver’s seat of a moving Tesla — 17 of them posted this year alone. Police issued citations or filed charges in 13 additional cases where no video surfaced, four of them this year.

Excerpt from NBC News:

Josh, a Tesla owner in Southern California, spends a lot of time on highways. His son is an avid athlete and needs to be taken to tournaments, sometimes 100 miles away. Lately, Josh has found a new way to pass the time on the road: napping.

“If I’m tired, I’ll sleep,” he said in an interview with NBC News.

Beyond politics, one of Musk’s frequent topics is himself. About 6% of his posts during the month referenced his own quotes, videos of interviews he has given or other bits of his life story and the mythology surrounding it. Notably — and I think @masnick.com will appreciate this — the ACLU of Minnesota has reversed its earlier support for this law.
“While we believe that creating the technology to alter or ‘nudify’ photos of identifiable people is protected by the First Amendment, we also recognize that the non-consensual creation and dissemination of such material can inflict damage on people appearing in those images,” the ACLU of Minnesota said in a statement Friday.

“In engaging with lawmakers on this issue, we hoped to strike an appropriate balance between First Amendment rights and the ability of people harmed to seek remedial measures, not unlike the remedies available to people harmed by defamation. The final version of the bill does not strike that balance,” the organization said.

“America’s Gorbachev … weakening a superpower he meant to strengthen.”
Excerpt from the WSJ: Fiona Hill, Trump's top Russia adviser in his first term and now a coauthor of the British report, was skeptical about Washington's staying power. She shared her thoughts with Carney, who had served with her on Harvard's Board of Overseers. Trump, argued Hill, was America's answer to Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, weakening a superpower he meant to strengthen. $1 trillion is so much money that humans can’t grasp it. Maybe better to just say $1,000 billion?
NBC article excerpt:

The number itself can be difficult for humans to grasp. A study published in 2013 and based on experiments at the University of Richmond found that many people had difficulty understanding how numbers like 1 million, 1 billion and 1 trillion relate to one another. Asked to place the numbers on a line, about 35% of people spaced them "roughly equally" apart, which is incorrect. The authors concluded that it may be clearer to express a number like $1
trillion as $1,000 billion, instead.NBC article excerpt-

"These numbers are beyond human
experiences, so humans have no reference point for it. My guess is that Elon Musk has no idea what it means, because it is outside human experience," said Nora Newcombe, a psychology professor at Temple University who has studied the topic and ways to improve understanding.

An interesting question: Who among us would volunteer to go to Mars knowing that their life was in the hands of Elon Musk?
Excerpt from an NBC article:

Kate Greene, a writer who took part in a NASA-funded simulation of what it would be like to live on Mars, said she questioned how good Musk would be at taking care of people in harsh environments. She wrote a memoir about her four-month experience, “Once Upon a Time I Lived on Mars.”

“This is the sort of thing governments, not entrepreneurs, have experience with,” she wrote in an email.

“And as the world witnessed, when given the reins to reshape the U.S. government under DOGE, Musk’s approach was to casually and swiftly eliminate programs and funding with dire consequences,” she wrote, referring to the Department of Government Efficiency and its cuts to aid programs.
