Why an AI Audiobook Won’t Make You Rich
Audiobooks are big these days. But what if you're not in audio, either because your book didn't sell or you're self-published? Are you out of the loop? Well, not necessarily thanks to AI which is popping up everywhere right now. Yes, you can use AI to turn your work into an audiobook. But is that a good idea? Is it really worth it?

They'll want to feel there's no chance of it happening again. Which is understandable

Ridiculous. But I suspect we’d get a deal without Schengen and the euro. I’d vote for both.

Avoid bad installers and anyone doing it on the cheap. A local firm with their own crew are in my experience much better than these big national companies who simply hand out orders to sub contractors who may otherwise may not be reliable. We've had months of nightmare here with Boxt. Avoid.

And excellent service from a local family firm not far away. Octopus never even turned up for the survey.

David Hewson @davidhewson.com · 18h
I'd find a reputable installer to do a full survey Victoria. Preferably two because they will both say something different. Better than taking advice off strangers on the internet. We have been through panels, heat pump and battery install and had appalling service from Boxt, a very big name
110
David Hewson @davidhewson.com · 19h
If you put a heat pump into a poorly insulated home you'd better get ready for some colossal bills.
110
David Hewson @davidhewson.com · 20h
Best solution if you can run to it is a battery with inverter built in. That means you can make the most of off peak tariffs to run the heat pump
010
David Hewson @davidhewson.com · 20h
Best thing to do is get a survey by a reputable local installer who does a site visit and can tell you where everything would go. Heat pump newly installed here and I’m impressed but it only makes sense if you have decent insulation. Panels just hook under tiles and need to go to an inverter

Why free books from your library can be an author’s best friend
Here's a question every writer gets from time to time: if I borrow your book from the library, aren't I depriving you of income? Maybe not. In fact you may well be helping us in what's rarely a well-paid profession. Libraries buy their ebook licences in the first place. In over thirty countries, including the UK, Canada and Australia, though sadly not the US, authors are paid every time a book is borrowed, through a scheme called Public Lending Right.

Forgot how bad DPD are. Important delivery just came back you weren’t in with a pic of a house so far away I don’t even recognise it. When I look in their app it has me living in a wood. If I try to correct it computer says no. Chances of talking to a human 😂

For this #MosaicMonday we look up into the spectacular presbytery vault of San Vitale in #Ravenna. To me, the Ravenna #mosaics are an astonishing collection, the last magnificent product of late antiquity. But whose empire does this shimmering C6 CE ceiling actually represent? #AncientBluesky 🏺
PRESBYTERY VAULT MOSAICS, C. 547 CE. BASILICA OF SAN VITALE, RAVENNA

A view looking straight up into the vaulted ceiling of the presbytery. At the apex within a starry medallion is the Lamb of God. The central wreath is supported by four white robed angels, a visual inheritance from classical winged Victories. They stand upon blue globes, an ancient symbol of cosmic dominion. The vault sections are filled with a lush paradise of acanthus vines and birds, echoing Augustan imagery of abundance. This shared classical vocabulary reflects the complex political reality of C6 CE Ravenna. The basilica was begun under Ostrogothic rule, a regime using Roman art to present themselves as theoretically still part of the empire. When Justinian consecrated the church in c. 547 CE he did not have to replace the Ostrogothic aesthetic. The Gothic kings' official style was already Roman, allowing this final flowering of late antiquity to bridge two competing empires.

Sad to hear of the death of Peter May. A lovely chap and great company. I well remember him turning up to a Bouchercon panel in a kilt. So a brave Scot too.

A few nights ago found a terrified lurcher left behind by hare coursers hiding in the carport. Too scared to allow a man near, doubtless due to ill treatment. Ran off and a female neighbour took him to vet for treatment. Now being rehomed. Rural crime is a real issue getting little attention

Depressing amount of rural crime going on round here right now - hare coursing, deer poaching, fences down, rammed by stolen vehicles. Country living isn't all bucolic bliss.

The Ateneo Veneto: a fitting home for a noir festival
The Ateneo Veneto is Venice Noir’s spiritual home, a little-known spot that opened its doors to us when we were just a tiny band of book lovers with big ideas. Let me introduce you to this wondrous place. It began, in the mid-1400s, as a merger of two lay confraternities, the Scuola di San Girolamo and the Scuola di Santa Maria della Consolazione.

My newest blogpost focuses on ancient public clocks in Venice. These machines worked on a specific logic, different from nowadays. No worries, in the end, still nobody knows what time is, but you can always discuss how we relate to time: www.seevenice.it/en/ancient-p...

Ancient public clocks in Venice used different rules as clocks nowadays. Public clocks governed finance, politics and scientific knowledge.
