Depends on what kind of personhood one has in mind. If we are talking "natural personhood," then consciousness has been (historically speaking) one of the qualifying criterion. But "legal personhood" is very different. We already have artifacts that are legal persons but not conscious: Corporations.

I've got a new game. Call it "The Reverse Turing Test." Write a short paragraph that emulates #LLM generated content, test it in an #AI detection tool, and then iteratively modify it until you achieve the score of 100% #AI Generated.

Oh FFS...know your enemy. Targeting the machines as the problem--like the luddites of the 19th century--does little or nothing to effectively challenge the fundamental social, political, and economic disparities that organize contemporary life. Think outside the technological determinist box.

Like all binary oppositions, the current debate between #AI enthusiasts and anti #AI opponents fails to critically question what both sides tacitly endorse and agree upon. The problem is not the #AI or even the Data Centers. The problem is the asymmetries of power under late-stage capitalism.

Play that Gunky Music. In philosophy, it is inconvenient when one's surname does not lend itself to being turned into an adjective. And mine is definitely the poster-child as both "Gunkelian" and "Gunkelist" are just cumbersome. But the alternatives may be no better: "Gunkist" or "Gunky."

And based on your recommendation I also read it. But since I also read a lot of Derrida--we're talking 30 years of reading--and a lot of essays and books about Derrida, I was puzzled by a reading of Derrida that did not look like anything that I would have called Derrida. So I had questions.

David Gunkel @davidgunkel.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
If I remember correctly, it was you who started it.

David Gunkel @davidgunkel.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
Now I will definitely have to read it. I have worked with and written about "Plato's Pharmacy" on a number of occasions. In fact, I was fortunate enough to talk with Derrida about the essay during the Philosophy and Architecture conference that we held at DePaul University in the mid-1990's.

David Gunkel @davidgunkel.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
Actually that is what I have already wrote in the book. What was written here is arguably a result of that book now speaking through me.

I have not, but I am taking requests (as the band would say). And this one looks very promising. I will get a hold of a copy just as soon as I get on the ground. I'm currently in transit to Sapporo for a conference keynote with the title "Does Writing Have a Future?--Literary Theory for LLMs").

David Gunkel @davidgunkel.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
For myself, I'd say that Kitzinger is right with a caveat. #LLMs do not speak. And they do not write, if by "write" what is meant is that standard Aristotelian understanding of the term as the derived representation of what would have been said.
110
David Gunkel @davidgunkel.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
Thank god. Otherwise there would be no one to talk to about this stuff and (for the sake of my publisher) no one interested in buying books about Derrida and #LLMs.

David Gunkel @davidgunkel.bsky.social · 03/09/2026
It is possible that your (LG's) reading of Derrida might eventually produce something useful for our understanding of LLMs. But if getting there requires distorting Derrida to such an extent that others question it, maybe take a pass on speaking through Derrida and do it directly in your own voice.
