Howard Zinn was really one of the greatest writers.
“I've always resented the smug statements of politicians, media commentators, corporate executives who talked of how, if you worked hard you would become rich.
The meaning of that was if you were poor it was because you hadn't worked hard enough. I knew this was a lie, as I saw my father and millions of others, men and women who worked harder than anyone, harder than financiers and the politicians, - harder than anybody, still struggle in poverty.”
— Howard Zinn.

One of the knock-on benefits of Universal Basic income, would be that people would not need to waste time on forms, and could use that time for projects, growing vegetables and many many more things.
"Being poor is actually a full-time job & being
broke is like a full-time job with the amount of
paperwork and the time going from office to
office proving what you have done.

With Universal Basic Income all that would
be eliminated with the time liberated to do
something socially productive."

"We have not even begun to think about
what our lives could be like if technology
were really marshaled to fit human needs.

How many hours would we really need to
work in order to maintain a functional
society — that is, if we got rid of all the
useless or destructive occupations like
telemarketers, financial analysts, prison
guards, bureaucrats & politicians while
turning our best scientific minds away
from working on space weaponry or
stock market systems to mechanizing
away dangerous or annoying tasks
like resource mining or cleaning
the bathroom.”

David Graeber wrote a piece about bullying. It was called "The Bully’s Pulpit." It is a good read if you are looking for something to read today. This is an extract from that piece. And here is the link to the full piece: davidgraeber.org/articles/the...
No one would deny, of course, that humans are flawed creatures. Just about every human language has some analogue of the English “humane” or expressions like “to treat someone like a human being,” implying that simply recognizing another creature as a fellow human entails a responsibility to treat them with a certain minimum of kindness, consideration, and respect. It is obvious, however, that nowhere do humans consistently live up to that responsibility. And when we fail, we shrug and say we’re “only human.” To be human, then, is both to have ideals and to fail to live up to them.

This is from, Fragments of an Anarchist Anthropology. David Graeber wrote the piece back in 2004.
"It’s not just that anarchism does not tend to have much use for high theory. It’s that it is primarily concerned with forms of practice; it insists, before anything else, that one’s means must be consonant with one’s ends; one cannot create freedom through authoritarian means; in fact, as much as possible, one must oneself, in one’s relations with one’s friends and allies, embody the society one wishes to create."

On Anarchism.
"The easiest way to explain anarchism is to say that
it is a political movement that aims to bring about a
genuinely free society - one where humans only enter
those kinds of relations with one another that would not
have to be enforced by the constant threat of violence.
History has shown that vast inequalities of wealth,
institutions like slavery, debt peonage or wage labour,
can only exist if backed up by armies, prisons, & police.

Anarchists wish to see human relations that would not
have to be backed up by armies, prisons and police.
Anarchism envisions a society based on equality and
solidarity, which could exist solely on the free consent
of participants."

This is a pretty funny story David Graeber explained from his book, the Democracy Project. We have all gone through 'late fees' and felt we did something wrong. Just be aware that if this happens to you again that the companies know exactly what they are doing.
I remember I once allowed a Macy’s clerk to talk me into
acquiring a Macy’s charge card, in order to buy sunglasses.

I sent in a check to pay the charge before leaving the country
for an extended trip, but apparently miscalculated by some
$2.75 when figuring the tax; when I returned a few months
later, I discovered I had something like $500 in late fees.

We’re not in the habit of calculating such numbers because
they are, even more than debts, seen as the wages of sin:
you only pay them because you did something wrong. In fact,
the entire system is now geared toward ensuring we make
such mistakes, since the entire system of corporate profits
depends on them.

It is a pity that the BBC never mention these details and stories of people on welfare when discussions related to welfare arise.
"Most rock bands started on public relief. If you give money to working class kids, a significant number of them will form bands, and a few of those bands will be amazing, and it will benefit the country a 1000 times more than all of those kids would have done had they been lifting boxes or whatever they’re making them do now as welfare conditionality."

From: A practical utopians guide to the coming collapse davidgraeber.org/articles/a-p...
"Neoliberalism has always been wracked by a central paradox.
It declares that economic imperatives are to take priority over all others. Politics itself is just a matter of creating the conditions for growing the economy by allowing the magic of the marketplace to do its work.

All other hopes and dreams—of equality, of security—are to be sacrificed for the primary goal of economic productivity. But global economic performance over the last few decades has been decidedly mediocre.

With one or two spectacular exceptions (notably China, which significantly ignored most neoliberal prescriptions), growth rates have been far below what they were in the days of the old-fashioned, state-directed, welfare-state-oriented capitalism of the 50s, 60s & even 70s."

Back in 2015, David Graeber wrote, 'The Bully’s Pulpit: On the elementary structure of domination.' This is a quote from that piece. davidgraeber.org/articles/the...
“The overwhelming majority of bullying incidents take place in front of an audience with private persecution relatively rare. Much of bullying is about humiliation, and the effects cannot really be produced without someone to witness them. Sometimes, onlookers actively abet the bully, laughing, goading, or joining in. More often, the audience is passively acquiescent.

Only rarely does anyone step in to defend a classmate being threatened, mocked, or physically attacked.”

Caring too much. That’s the curse of the working classes davidgraeber.org/articles/car...
"Feminists have long since pointed out that those on the bottom of any unequal social arrangement tend to think about, and therefore care about, those on top more than those on top think about, or care about, them.

Women everywhere tend to think and know more about men’s lives than men do about women, just as black people know more about white people’s, employees about employers’, and the poor about the rich."

The reality of modern work and of the opportunities available.
"Unless you get very lucky, your choices are largely limited to two options. You can get a basically bullshit job, which will pay the rent but leaves you wracked with the guilty feeling that you are being forced, against your will, to be a fraud and a parasite. Or, you can get a helpful, useful job taking care of people, making, moving or maintaining things that people want or need - but then, likely you'll be paid so little you won't be able to take care of your own family."
