Ottawa's multibillion dollar increase in military spending has been met with practically no pushback from mainstream media, even as the feds shift funding from public services to American war contractors. That was one of the takeaways from a recent talk by Alex Cosh, managing editor of The Maple.

Members of the community at UNB Saint John spent days reading the names of every child murdered in the Gaza genocide. All local MPs and MLAs were invited. Not one showed up. No mainstream media covered it. nbmediacoop.org/2026/09/18/n...
There was no media coverage, Houlahan said.
Every MP and MLA in the province was invited to attend, along with Mayor Donna Reardon and all members of Saint John city council, along with UNB’s board of governors and senior administrators, according to Houlahan.
“None of the MLAs, none of the MPs, none of the city council, none of the board of governors, none of the senior admin from the university even responded, let alone accepted the invitation,” Houlahan said.

So far this year, the seafood processing industry has brought in 2,360 migrant workers. That’s roughly 68 per cent of all migrant workers in the province. It’s the fifth consecutive year that the seafood processing industry has brought in upwards of 2,000 workers.

For TFWs, being classified as "vulnerable" means you have access to an open work permit, unlike other TFWs who are legally bound to their employer. So far this year 80 workers in NB have been been granted open work permits under the federal program for “vulnerable workers who are victims of abuse.”

Revisiting this article I wrote last year on preliminary figures showing that a record-breaking number of temporary foreign workers in NB (170) had been deemed “vulnerable” by immigration authorities, which basically means they had suffered workplace abuse. It turns out the final number was 205.

My take is that yes it's often nasty and malicious but there are also legitimate journalistic reasons for taking a photo without asking someone's permission, and ways to do so that respect their dignity. The problem requires cultural change, and it can't be addressed thru criminal law.

I imagine that proportionality will be central to the case at the ICC. And what if they come down against Netanyahu and Gallant? Will you just whine about the court being biased against Israel?

David Gordon Koch @davidgordonkoch.bsky.social · 09/09/2026
WTF are you talking about? I raised the issue of proportionality. My point was that the scale of death and destruction is obviously disproportionate. That's my assessment -- but I guess you can look at a concentration camp full of amputees, yawn, shrug and say "war is hell."

Okay you can just baldly deny these things as if you are working comms for the IDF. But if you actually care about legality you have to account for proportionality -- we can all see with our eyes the scale of the death and destruction affecting civilians and civilian infrastructure.

They differentiate the women and children killed. You haven't addressed the fact that in past few days alone Israel killed an 8-year-old girl and a 3-year-old boy. "Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part"

You ignore the evidence that Israel's often indiscriminate bombing campaign likely killed many of the hostages -- it wasn't about saving them. You also overlook the news that Netanyahu didn't act on warnings of an attack - which would have at least prevented Nova Fest from being extended to Oct. 7!
