Dahlia bulbs are fun gifts because you don't know what you're getting for months. We got these from our friend Lynda and have our first gorgeous bloom!

We've got a neighborhood picnic coming up, so I asked Google's AI for some suggestions. This potluck is going to be one to remember!
Top Served-at-Room-Temperature Poultry Recipes
Picnic Chicken: A crowd-pleasing dish marinated in Dijon mustard, dry white wine, and neutral oil. Baked early in the day, this recipe is explicitly designed to be served at room temperature, which allows the tangy mustard marinade to meld beautifully with the juicy chicken legs. [1] (https://www.ballarddesigns.com/howtodecorate/2014/06/recipe-easy-picnic-chicken/)Chicken Soba Salad & Lettuce Cups: Excellent choice for warm days or meal prep. You can throw together finely diced cooked chicken with scallions, water chestnuts, soy sauce, and sesame oil for crisp lettuce cups, or toss shredded poultry with nutty soba noodles, cucumbers, and a tangy bibimbap sauce. Both are refreshing when served completely unheated. [1] (https://www.cookunity.com/blog/cold-chicken-dishes)Ottolenghi Clementine & Arak Chicken: A legendary dinner party staple featured on The Kitchn. It combines chicken thighs with unpeeled clementine slices, fennel bulbs, anise-flavored arak (or Pernod), brown sugar, and mustard. The complex, sweet, and herbal syrup coats the chicken and tastes spectacular at a comfortable room temperature. [1] (https://www.thekitchn.com/the-four-best-chicken-dinner-party-recipes-of-all-time-268069)The Secret to Juicy Room-Temperature PoultryWhen serving cooked chicken or turkey at room temperature, the meat can dry out easily if it isn't roasted precisely.Watching a visual demonstration on staging your oven temperatures ensures the meat stays incredibly tender and moist even after it cools down completely:

The last 4 years have been such an anomaly that it's hard not to think we've already passed some sort of tipping point with climate change. Even among Democrats, there is so little discussion on this issue. But I have to wonder how long Republicans can continue calling this a hoax.
A chart from Climate Reanalyzer showing Daily Sea Surface Temperatures. The top line is red showing 2026 temperatures above any previous year. Sunday August 3rd is highlighted with an average temp anomaly of .82 °C over the 1991-2000 average, and 1 °C over the 1982-2010 average.

YouTube AI slop has come for America's past time. It's really sad because there are millions of people in this country who know way too much baseball trivia and would happily share that knowledge, and who would never make this mistake. But the algorithms fill every channel with garbage.

It had already loaded it's other AI support attempt, Suggested Solutions, referring me to other support tickets with the same issue, none of which had been resolved. It's almost like they don't have the humans to support their product, and are papering over that with increasingly inept AI systems.

"If you'll stop calling people white nationalists, then I'm open to the idea of not being one", is just the reverse of this cartoon and one more example of Murc's Law in action.
The famous Matt Bors cartoon where a lady calls a Trump supporter racist and he says her attitude is what is making him a racist and by the end he's getting a Nazi tatoo while shaving his head.

We ate dinner at Sada Sushi tonight, a very belated Mothers' Day dinner. We were seated at the weird table in the corner which is decorated with a vase filled with Andes Mint wrappers, and a bunch of small cats folded from chopstick wrappers. So we added our own. Hot tip: go to Sada, order ika.

Saw this poem in an alley. Corvallis is such a great town! "Pausing To Hear A Mountain" Greg Kleiner, Corvallis, Oregon
Pausing To Hear A Mountain

Living in a river bottom amid
maple and cotton wood
and too many people,
I hunger for a view, long
to see weather arrive from miles away.
watch dark threads of geese dissolve into sky

Marys Peak out our bedroom window
would do.
Once a week, even.
Sunday mornings
after the children have crawled in with us,
giggled and wiggled and burrowed down
and that moment of quiet blooms:
all of us breathing,
the bed flooded with sunlight.

Driving Bellfountain Road home
one Saturday evening, late September,
I pull over and shut off the engine.
Framed through the open passenger window
her graceful shape rises,
silhouetted. Silent.

A thistle seed drifts on the ripened light.
Spider webs cling to Queen Anne's Lace
Insects flit backlit in the turning.

Slowly, the light all bleeds away.

Istay.

Dew gathers, dulls the windshield.
No more cars streak past.
Four hours, my breath floats away
out the open window toward her presence,
that familiar arc carved from stars,
and in the hush of the moonless mornings,
I hear the rising and falling
of her breath.

Greg Kleiner

If you live near an asian store like Daiso, they have little egg timers that go right in the boiling water and change color to help get the eggs just how you like them. I still struggle with peeling soft boiled eggs reliably, but this gets them cooked perfect.

When I was a kid, we had the same mercury thermometer for decades. New digital thermometers are basically disposable, using a tiny watch battery less than 8mm across. If someone in your family gets sick, sorry, the battery's dead. Have fun chasing around town for an LR41 watch battery.
