Today is #SevereMEawareness Day, so I'll just leave this here. It does a good job illustrating how this chronic illness wrecks people's lives and why they can't advocate for themselves. Art by Kornelia Paulsen #MECFS #chronicillness
A graphic with 6 boxes: 1) M.E.: How it can shrink one's life bits by bits. 2) Before M.E.: A cityscape cartoon with work, cafe, party!, travel, gym, houses. 3) "Mild M.E." Work and home stand on a pillar. 4) "Moderate M.E." Just the home is on the pillar. 5) "Severe M.E." Just the bed is on the pillar. 6) "Very severe M.E." The box is dark.

It took me about 6 bobs burgers to make this rhombic dodecahedron. Both parts of the process were a good time. #origami

CHOMP! Zappa eats a treat on our favourite sitting stump
A golden retriever stands on a mossy stump. She bites into a crispy dog treat held by a pale white hand. Second growth forest stands behind her. The golden retriever stands proudly atop a giant mossy cedar stump in the woods. Much younger trees stand around her, amid fallen logs.

Found this guide to DIY wind power among some used books that came into the shop. Pub. 1977. Not sure how legit the advice is, but I love the cover style. Evokes forbidden knowledge. #booksky
A light-skinned hand holds up a thin, battered booklet called Planning a wind-powered generating system. By Enertech Corporation. Photo by Bror Hanson shows the silhouette of someone walking next to a tall windmill.

My first modular #origami in a while. I’m always amazed by how strong these models are when everything comes together.

No matter the state of my bodymind, the wind always feels nice. From my new piece in #disability newsletter Sick Stories. sickstories.substack.com/p/the-wind-f... #chronicillness #invisibleillness #MECFS #brainfog #writing #pwME #memoir
Text on a distorted blue background: The weather’s been strange lately. It's meant to be a bright, clear day. My hands appear in front of me like VR inside a primary blue sky, but every sensation seems too close and too far away to be real. A green-grey cloud of static suffuses everything, playing burst transmissions. The wind feels nice, though. Realistic.

Introducing a new piece of writing that just dropped at Sick Stories! “The wind feels nice: A brain fog memoir” Written and audio versions are available here: sickstories.substack.com/p/the-wind-f...
My foot lands gently on the curb
The infinite scroll unwinds into static storm clouds,
My mind a dandelion puff,
A skipping record,
A sea of concrete,
An empty phone booth,
An all-spider diet,
A seven-year-old dog.
The wind feels nice, though.

TIL I’ve been able to work so little this summer due to an #MECFS flare-up that spiders are reclaiming my desk for nature. (And most of the work I’ve done has been from the couch. Remote work is the only reason I can stay employed these days!) 🕷️🕸️

I’ve had some bedbound days lately and have been folding a lot of these Kawasaki roses. Since the third one, I’ve had the pattern memorized. Now it puts me in a nice muscle memory flow state, ideal for certain types of rest. One of the big reasons I do #origami at all. #pwME
About a dozen roses made of paper on top of a cutting mat. Various colours

Has anyone read this book, and would you recommend it? I don’t have the spoons to read it now - it’s pretty dense philosophy. But I’ve been thinking about western culture’s discomfort with death and #disability topics a lot lately. #booksky

I'm reading this collection of essays on #disability and memoir by Johanna Hedva and typing out notes as I go. There are lots of thick, juicy ideas in here about #chronicillness, #accessibility, #ableism, and what it means to be a human body under capitalism. ⬇️ cambium.micro.blog/2025/07/05/r...
A book called "How To Tell When We Will Die: On Pain, Disability, and Doom" by Johanna Hedva is held in front of a yard and a forest.

I just started reading this book, which is technically a memoir but seems structured as a set of essays about various pleasures. Pub 1989. Like ch. 3 is about why she and her house love each other. “On Pleasures in Principle” is the prologue. Etc.

📚 My latest Book Talk column is all about public libraries on Haida Gwaii and how libraries provide so, SO much more than books. I think I’ve also broken some news here. The new Masset branch and Xaad Kil Immersion Lab will have its grand opening on Sep 13! 🥳 @vilibrary.bsky.social
A printed newspaper column called Book Talk written by me. This one’s called “Way more than books: VIRL gives Haida Gwaii more services than I can fit in this column”. A photo of graffiti art at the Daajing Giids branch is shown next to the cover of “The Heart in Winter”, a novel by Kevin Barry. An ad from Haida Gwaii News to support local journalism is at the bottom of the page.

Happy to report that @archerh.bsky.social opened up the bookshop tonight after our winter break. You’ll notice some thematically appropriate titles on display. We may be living in the Biff Tannen timeline, but books and people who read them are giving me joy. #BookSky @which3avebooks.bsky.social

They don’t need to be books *about* disability, either. Stories that treat disability as a regular part of life are warmly welcomed. E.g. One #book on my list is Machine, a #scifi novel by Elizabeth Bear. I wrote about it here: haidagwaiinews.com/the-future-i...
