Drop your longest run from the last 4 weeks. Not your planned long run. Not the one you “almost finished.” The one you actually completed recently. And add what race you’re training for. I put together the full long-run guide by race goal: → www.runnersblueprint.com/long-run/

One marathoner runs 20 miles in 2:30. Another needs 4+ hours. Same distance. Not even close to the same workout. Yet people still tell every marathoner they “must hit 20.” Before you force another 20-miler, read this: www.runnersblueprint.com/the-real-tal...

A VO₂ max of 40 can look pretty ordinary on one runner and seriously good on another. That’s the part I think gets lost when everyone starts comparing watch numbers Deeper dive into VO₂ max number means, and how runners can improve it, I put the full guide here. www.runnersblueprint.com/vo2-max/

A 40 or 45 minute first 5K is not some embarrassing beginner result. I swear running social media has made people completely lose track of what starting from zero actually looks like.

Your lifetime 5K PB is 21:30. You ran it at 27. You're 52 now and just ran 22:18, your fastest time in 15 years. New PB... or does 27-year-old you still own it? Over 40? Age grading can completely change how you look at that old PB: www.runnersblueprint.com/why-age-grad...

If a run club says “ALL PACES WELCOME”... …but the slowest runner ends up alone... are all paces actually welcome? Fast runners deserve their workout. But don't call the club beginner-friendly if beginners keep getting dropped. What should “all paces welcome” actually mean?

Someone posted a 2:08 half and wrote “lol I suck.” That kind of sums up what being around runners online does to your brain after a while 😂 A 2-hour half is not elite, nobody is saying that. But you're still holding around 5:41/km or 9:09/mile for 21.1 km,

Nobody wants to say this out loud but your pre-race poop routine might matter more than half the fancy stuff runners obsess over 😂Some runners need coffee, some need coffee + race nerves, and some apparently need two or three trips before they'll even think about leaving the house.

A 35-MINUTE 5K AT 70 CAN BE MORE IMPRESSIVE THAN A 25-MINUTE 5K AT 22. That will upset runners who believe the clock is the only thing that matters. But age matters. A lot. See exactly where your 5K ranks for your age: www.runnersblueprint.com/average-5k-t...

Most marathon blow-ups don't start at mile 20. They start at mile 5 when goal pace feels ridiculously easy. The marathon rarely punishes you when you make the mistake. It waits 15 miles to send the bill. Have you ever lost your race in the first 10K?
120
David Dack @daviddack88.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
Treadmill miles are real miles. If you think they “don’t count,” you’re confusing suffering with training. A mile doesn’t become more legitimate because it was freezing, raining, dark, or miserable.

How hot is too hot for a run? Under 60°F = dream weather 60–69°F = fast-day weather 70–79°F = sweat starts early 80–89°F = pace needs to calm down 90°F+ = survival, not speed High heat plus humidity = the number lies Dizzy or weak = the run is over What temperature makes you move your run indoors?

Most runners don’t need a faster easy pace. They need one they’re not embarrassed to repeat tomorrow. First comment: The problem usually isn’t that runners don’t understand easy pace. It’s that easy pace feels too humble when the watch is watching.

Rough long-run ranges: 5K plan = 4–7 miles 10K = 6–10 Half = 8–12 Marathon = 16–22 Ultra = depends on the race Mine changes a lot by goal. How far are you going this week?
180
David Dack @daviddack88.bsky.social · 10/08/2026
Your 10K time is harder to fake than your 5K time. A 5K lets you borrow some speed and suffer. A long run lets you hide behind an easy pace. But the 10K asks a nastier question: How much of your speed can you actually HOLD? That’s where your training starts telling the truth.

A 3:59 marathon means holding 9:09 pace for the whole 26.2. That is quick for most adults. A 4:10 runner is not suddenly lazy either. There is a huge middle between elite and slow. Running pages barely talk about it. Which part is harder for you: the pace or holding it late?
450
David Dack @daviddack88.bsky.social · 05/08/2026

You do not need to look like a runner before you start training for a 5K. A lot of beginners think they need to lose weight, buy the right clothes or get fit first. That makes no sense. Training is how you get fitter.
