Related, many children are hurt that the hardest word for their parents to say is “well done” but for me in the case of ყოჩაღ this is literally true

I’ve been workshopping a joke about aspiring to pronounce Georgian correctly but unfortunately all the hardest sounds are non-aspirated

Tbilisi’s marshrutkas continue to be the ultimate test of both physical endurance and linguistic comprehension.

Proud to donate one of your two likes—but will note that while I would never entrust AI with writing an email, it’s incredibly useful for spotting errors or suggesting improvements in emails. Like spellcheck on steroids.

Israel's siege is starving the people of Gaza. We have joined more than 100 aid and rights groups to demand action - before there is no one left to save. Read the full statement here: bit.ly/3GPCpAE

If you can say ‘find the most powerful quote exemplifying x theme’ it’ll do well, I’d think — but it’s probably less adept at the instinctive skill of noticing what a given piece is missing.

I often plug interview transcripts into Gemini after I’ve written something, to compare - and while I wouldn’t trust it to write anything from scratch, with the right prompt it’s annoyingly good at finding the powerful quotes.

Our newborn had her first ‘poopocalypse’ and my broken internet brain immediately thought of Thiel’s fascist FT op-ed on how the apokálypsis isn’t the end of the world but instead a great “unveiling”. A load of shit, obviously, but in this case unarguable.

Stellar work from the folks at OCCRP on a long-running network of scam call centres based partly in the Republic of Georgia – well worth a read 👇 www.occrp.org/en/project/s...

Depressing stuff! I suppose it’s maybe predictable that as decreased socialising/socialisation makes us less human, we also end up producing fewer humans.

Thanks for sharing - fascinating article. Was surprised he didn’t mention that in a lot of places the lower fertility rate is downstream of an overall reduction in coupling/marriage — was covered in an interesting FT Economics Show episode recently.

The later in the night it is, the more I’m convinced that the New Year’s Eve classics ‘The Irony of Fate’ and ‘Dinner for One’, are essentially the same story of extreme drunkenness and mistaken identity, differing only in class ideology… and length

"it's my child!!" Utterly horrendous scene in #Tbilisi tonight, mother screaming in distress as thuggish police rips her child away. Hard to watch, but put sound on, watch, share & send to anyone who may still support GD to watch what horror they are inflicting. #Georgia #RepressionGeorgia

I cannot emphasise enough how strongly I feel that if you haven’t read J L Carr’s ‘A Month in the Country’, you would benefit from doing so
Ah, those days . .. for many years afterwards their happiness haunted me. Sometimes, listening to music, I drift back and nothing has changed. The long end of summer. Day after day of warm weather, voices calling as night came on and lighted windows pricked the darkness and, at day-break, the murmur of corn and the warm smell of fields ripe for harvest. And being young. If I'd stayed there, would I always have been happy? No, I suppose not. People move away, grow older, die, and the bright belief that there will be another marvellous thing around each corner fades. It is now or never; we must snatch at happiness as it flies.
