The question to ask of capitalism is simple: does the right of business to exploit consumers and workers trump the right of consumers and workers to be protected from exploitation? And overwhelmingly, the AI industry's answer is YES - hence hatred of AI becoming an anticapitalist inflection point.

Since @gilbertgalindo.bsky.social has revealed the news over on IG, I will announce it here! The opera is THE LAND REMEMBERS, centered on a modern Mexican American family trying to decide whether to sell their ranch. We visit their ancestors at key moments of joy & loss across 5 centuries.

THE LAND REMEMBERS: An Opera in Two Acts. Music—Gilbert Galindo. Libretto—David Bowles.

What he built became the largest pyramid in the world (in terms of surface area).

121

David Bowles @davidbowles.us · 10/08/2026

Sorry, yes, the giant part is important, lol. The giant was Prince Xelhua of Chollolan, in the Codex Vaticanus A.

121

David Bowles @davidbowles.us · 10/08/2026

OMG, LOL, "xelhua" in Nahuatl either refers to a prince of Chollolan (Cholula) who had a very tall tower built to escape a potential flood or to the wattles on a bird like the turkey ...

121

David Bowles @davidbowles.us · 08/08/2026

The composer is Gilbert Galindo, who is from San Antonio originally. He previously set one of my poems to music.

041

David Bowles @davidbowles.us · 08/08/2026

Basically one or two scenes per era, just highlighting what they've gone through, the compromises they've made, and how they have always been good stewards of the land, even when it shouldn't have been theirs. That helps them make the right decision, which I won't spoil, but it's bad-ass.

221

David Bowles @davidbowles.us · 08/08/2026

And we see their ancestors leave Tlaxcala in the late 1500s to settle San Esteban de Nueva Tlaxcala in Saltillo, then we jump forward 150 years to when a later generation follows Escandón to Laredo and establishes their ranch on Carrizo territory, then through La Matanza, back to the present.

111

David Bowles @davidbowles.us · 08/08/2026

Yeah. It's just two acts. The premise is a modern day Mexican American family whose cattle ranch outside of Laredo has been driven into debt, and a [censored] company wants to buy their land to build a [guess]. The abuela takes them on a sort of journey through their past.

111

David Bowles @davidbowles.us · 08/08/2026

Yes, I am in the process of cutting, cutting, cutting ... even before the composer comes along and tells me to cut more, hahaha :lolsob:

English, with some Spanish and Nahuatl. It's an intergenerational story about a family across five centuries.

I mean, yup, but also (in my defense) my book is a YA novel like the latter HP books, awarded by the American Library Association, and doesn't suffer from any queermisia as it features a pansexual protagonist in a relationship with what we would call a trans / non-binary character. 😜

121

David Bowles @davidbowles.us · 03/08/2026

Fuck Harry Potter. Go read THE PRINCE & THE COYOTE.

This election season, a new candidate has tossed her ha— her MASK into the ring. Her platform is pretty straightforward. T-shirts, stickers and buttons forthcoming through our Kickstarter (and beyond).

A political poster reads "In Texas November 2026, Vote the Matron for governor. Eat the rich." In the middle is an image of the woman ax murderer and cannibal from THE MATRON comic series, wearing a red-streaked white mask, a hooded burgundy cloak, and a bearded ax. She's standing in front of the Texas flag.
