I'm sometimes an artist and always a non conformist. I used to make jewelry but these days I'm into music and photography. I've traveled a lot in my life and speak several languages. More on my website. DavidBaca.com

September wild flowers. Flowering and decaying at the same time this late in the season.

You inlfuenced me enough to dig out an old copy of the Robert Fitzgerald translation from 1963 but not enough to pay for the new one yet. The one I'd really like to get is the Harvard Classics version with the original greek and a translation. My greek isn't up to it but I'd still like to try.

The original Lulu is hilarious, a 1930s wise ass little girl. Later versions are a lot more tame.

Sometimes it's really hard to distinguish the bots and the humans who have so self indoctrinated that they express themselves like bots. I generally don't engage in online conversations that are filled with cliches and logical fallacies.

I read the news today, oh boy. Yeah, John Lennon, it was a nice time to live in in when the worst the news had to offer was a guy committing suicide in his car and a bunch of gophers making holes in field somewhere in England.

My annual May ritual, photographing the blooming cacti in my yard. These are just a few of many. I really went wild this year and took lots of photos with different cameras and lenses. These were done with Nikon D300s and a Vivitar 28-70 manual focus lens from the 1980s.

The "intelligence" in AI is just marketing. It's really just sophisticated data processing that can mimic intelligence at a very high cost. It really should be called machine learning because that's what it is. It has no consciousness, no soul.

As chile ramen goes, this one is the stuff. This one has better noodles and left me in a state of chile beatitude with all nasal passages cleared of debris and a glowing warmth in my belly on a cold day. Sort of like living through a mini near death experience.

Facebook is a cesspool and a whore that will promote any content it's paid to promote. My blockist of maga conspiracy BS pages is in the hundreds. It usually comes as a blitz where every 5 items or so on my feed will be the same bot posts under different names, all obviously paid promotions.

King Crimson's first album, At the Court of the Crimson King. Robert Fripp when he was young. Another $1 dregs score, a surprising one because this one has some resale value.

Los Feos de Columbia - The Ugly Guys from Columbia. Another dregs find, found in a stack of dollar records picked over by numerous collectors and dealers. Cumbia from 1980, the Spanish lyrics are filled with sexual innuendo.

Another random jazz album. It's turned into one of my favorite random records bought over the last year. I've played it several times already. 1950s jazz is one of my favorite genres these days for random record buying.

Random album cover. Flamenco from the early 1960s. This one was really worth a listen and I love the cover photo. Buying cheap vinyl is very competitive these days and I'm always finding gems in the dregs left by others.

Another Random Album Cover. This one came from a thrift store. I put it on the turntable thinking it would be cheesy but it wasn't. Almost any jazz album that Atlantic put out under Ahmet Ertegun is worth listening to.

Another random album cover. This is one of the few records left in the second week of a massive record collection sale. It's an anthology of cumbias from Medellin Columbia in the 1980s, the Pablo Escobar era. 14 danceable canon shots, better translated as 14 big dance hits. Cheerful music.

Found right next to the Willie Nelson album, the Stone's Let it Bleed. Looks like they both came from the same yard sale. Appropriate because the Stones go country in this album and leave behind 60s pop. It's the Stones at the their most stoned for sure.

I think his record label of the time had something to do with it. He looks a lot better on the back side. His hair is already growing out and he's not doing the over produced 60s Nashville sound. He was already on the way but the label didn't want to publicize it.

Willie Nelson in 1967 before cannabis. If anything promotes cannabis, it's this album cover. Unfortunately, the album inside is warped and scratched like it was played 6000 times at drunken parties. The music is pretty straight forward honky tonk country, not all that different from later Willie.

I have an ugh, puke reaction to Sabine. I tried one of her videos and cut it off at around 60 seconds. The quote on the book cover is so right wing echo chamber which confirms my initial reaction.

The unforeseen consequences would be planetary not solar system wide but it would still have a cooling effect on the earth. The energy beams would likely cause ozone damage and otherwise be hazardous. And the plausibility is arguable especially if cost/benefit is taken into consideration.

In high school, we had a substitute science teacher who proposed building an artificial ring around the earth to collect solar energy and beam it to the surface. Unlike Dyson, I think he was serious. I'm also reminded of Edward Teller wanting to use atom bombs for construction projects.

There's a reason old tech is so fashionable these days. For dealing with newer tech, I use Linux and dumb down my android smart phone as much as possible and use F-Droid instead of Google Play.

Crimson moon rising over Taos mountain. It turned more yellow as it rose. I wasn't expecting anything like this last night so I just grabbed a 500mm mirror lens and bumped up the ISO to shoot it hand held. It came out alright.

Rainbow over the Taos Valley. An almost perfect shot but I didn't have a wide enough lens to capture the full double rainbow. Shot at 17mm, f8, 250 shutter speed for those interested in such details. Both exposure and focus were set manually.

The only code question I ever asked AI was for some regex rules to block Youtube ads with a Pi-hole. I got a complete run around. I thought of trying Grok but opening an account on a toxic platform wasn't worth the trouble. Like going to a biker bar in a bad neighborhood to buy drugs.

The Clash's London Calling. This record turned up rummaging through my stuff. I bought it sometime around 1984. It was in a $2 discount bin at Skaggs drug store. It was a great score at the time and I still enjoy listening to it after all these years.

The weekend's yard sale haul, 4 books for a dollar, all serious scholarly material. I could have bought the whole box for $4 or 5 but I already have enough books that I'm never going to read so I restrained myself to books that actually interested me.

I watched a short news segment on the LA protests and when it went to Trump I quickly shut it off with a "Shut the F up, you lying sack of shit" reaction. It's the same reaction I always have to him, my anti Trump credentials are impeccable because my bullshit detector just as impeccable.

Nothing, I read several languages I don't speak but if you want true fluency, you have to deal with people, not tech. There are lot of subtleties you miss otherwise.

I question Duo Lingo even without AI. Having learned several languages in my life, it's one a matter of hard work and persistence, and two mixing with the people who use that language. Without the human interaction, you just have a concept of the language, not the actual language.

The far right likes LOTR for the wrong reasons, like they never grew up. I read it several times between ages 8 and 14 but I've long since moved on. I'm currently reading some of Tolkien's sources in Latin and Old English along with Borges in Spanish who's a fantasy author of a different sort.

Astronomy and astrophysics are the sciences I follow with fanboy enthusiasm just because there's so much that's new and exciting coming out daily. Yeah, a lot of it is just the images from Hubble & JWST but every now and then I do a deep dive into astrophysics and it's just as mind blowing.
