David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 26/09/2026Claude just said something is load-bearing, despite my custom instructions being very clear about that phrase but at least it had the sense to add: "sorry — but literally, here, it is: the whole plan rests on it". 2026, man, what a time to be alive. 100
David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 25/09/2026Haha I know, when mine says 0:09 you know it's nearly done 🤣 make it make sense! 010
Reposted by David AsbothTim Clare @timclare.bsky.social · 25/09/2026The Guardian has printed articles week after week foregrounding the narrative that 'councils are at breaking point' because of the 'burden' of SEN kids having the gall to ask for support that allows them to access the same education as their peers. The focus always on cost, not human dignity. 14810
David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 21/09/2026Haha yes "Jupyter within an IDE" is like using an IDE but not really. I would still reach for my trusty (vanilla Jupyter) notebooks for any analysis, but I will be the first to admit I haven't modernised my own data stack. I'm sure there are better tools out there now. 010
David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 20/09/2026Do notebooks like Jupyter count as "outside of an IDE"? 110
Reposted by David AsbothTim Clare @timclare.bsky.social · 18/09/2026If you are convinced that AI is, despite its flaws & ethical failings, a reliable research tool, ask it a specific question in a domain you know very well. Most people - understandably - ask LLMs questions about areas they're not experts in. They can't judge if the information is accurate. 3319
David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 06/09/2026I don't know what "liking" this means but I mean it to mean: sending you good vibes. Having to do any sort of home renovation (on top of everything else in Life) with an impending baby is certifiably Not Fun. 101
David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 06/09/2026Teaching kids how to use an encyclopedia in 2026 feels delightfully rebellious, but also more important than ever! 110
David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 14/08/2026I wonder how much is to do with the attention economy. Maybe we don't trust the reader to remember something if the author doesn't repeat themselves 10 times. Maybe in the moment it annoys me but I wouldn't remember anything from a short book where each point was only made once, I don't know! 200
David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 13/08/2026OK fair, maybe the publishers don't mandate it, but I'd say the majority of nonfiction I read is too long and feels like padding. Maybe it is down to the authors, but if the publisher's incentives are really aligned with shorter books, do the editors not get involved? 110
David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 13/08/2026See also: most nonfiction books should be a third of their actual length. I imagine there are publisher pressures forcing people to pad out to 300+ pages but the worst reader experience is finishing (or not) a nonfiction book and thinking it could have been a blog post. 100
David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 13/08/2026Had no idea this was a thing, opted out. Thank you for your service 🫡 000

David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 17/07/2026Good advice, I've sort of been assuming all the ideas are already in my brain, but I also often forget why I walked into a room so perhaps some humility and research are in order. 050
David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 17/07/2026The goal for me here in the first instance is not to publish, but to write. I suppose my question is do I hone my craft more by finding competitions, writing groups, peers, or do I just... write a novel and think about the rest later. Or both? Maybe it's not even a useful question, I don't know. 220
David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 17/07/2026I've had a nonfiction textbook published and it was loads of work, paid badly, totally worth it. Feels like writing fiction would be very different, because in the textbook world I had a signed contract before writing a single word. 120
David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 17/07/2026I did your Couch to 80k and the January writing exercises, write more than ever but still sporadically. What's the next step? Just write a novel? Enter writing competitions to hone my writing and get feedback? The ultimate goal is "do more writing to fulfil my creative side" but also "write a novel" 140
David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 16/07/2026Of course I made that up, this is social media. That reality doesn't exist, and it's just my opinion. Gung-ho was clearly exaggeration. And I do think regardless of how England lost, the media would have attacked Tuchel. Maybe fewer individual fans, but he wouldn't get a free ride as being unlucky. 110
David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 16/07/2026Also - Tuchel would have been crucified if they had gone more gung-ho and lost ("why didn't they try to defend the lead?"). Can't win in his position unless you actually win! 100
David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 16/07/2026Why not very likeable? Interesting. They play some nice football, grind out exciting wins, have a genius among them, and clearly want to win and are fired up with passion. They're also not as bad at playacting as Portugal or Brazil (both much less likable imo). I don't know, they're hardly Paraguay. 101
David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 09/07/2026My favourite AC by a long way (the original, I didn't know there was a remaster, which likely wasn't necessary). People say "it's not really an AC game like the others" and I don't know, maybe that's why it's my favourite 🤣 000
David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 08/07/2026I think as a society we went wrong when we started using the word "curious" to mean "weird" rather than "inquisitive". 010
David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 02/07/2026Not bad. Who wouldn't want to see the game reduced to a keeper vs keeper battle? 100
David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 02/07/2026You know what's even worse though? The thing they do in other sports where one side is randomly "assigned" the winner in case of a draw, e.g. fencing (I believe). Also, replays wouldn't work for knockout tournaments. So what... indefinite extra time? That also sounds bad. Not an easy problem! 100
David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 02/07/2026As a fan, I hate penalty shootouts more than anything. Even winning on penalties outweighs the stress. Fun if you're a neutral though. Some counterpoints: 1. This WC we've had exceptionally exciting shootouts so far. 2. Extra time was at its worst when they introduced the silver goal in 2004. 000
David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 24/06/2026There are definitely too many Slack channels in the world. That said, I do miss our company one that was dedicated to finding the best flavour of yoghurt in nearby supermarkets. 110
David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 23/06/2026Don't get me started... as an instructor, I've often been benchmarked on NPS and you can get a "bad" NPS score with an average of 7-8 out of 10. And the benchmark scores can be like "over 20 NPS is good" like ?!? So many things wrong with it. 000

David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 15/06/2026As with most Olympic sports, everyone becomes an expert in them temporarily, then we don't speak of them for 4 years 010
David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 15/06/2026I disagree, it's great to watch if you're Hungarian because it's one sport we're consistently good at. But I admit I don't watch it outside of the Olympics... 100

David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 14/06/2026Particularly hard for generalists who don't have their identity rooted in any one of the N groups they're part of. I feel like a "casual" in all of my interest areas! 110

David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 07/06/2026Sorry you're having a tough time, Tim. Burnout is so hard to see coming, and rest can feel both impossible and a luxury. A wise man once said, in his Couch to 80k writing bootcamp, something like "your worth isn't based on what you produce". Perhaps those words can make their way through. Take care! 060
David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 03/06/2026BRB, grieving something that I didn't know didn't exist. 020

David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 03/06/2026I can relate. I've switched careers somewhat every 5 years so far, and I'm up to year 6 in the current one. I'm definitely feeling The Itch but finding it harder and harder to tell people what I do (because it's: "lots!"). It seems to me generalists have a worse time with this in, ahem, general. 010
David Asboth @davidasboth.com · 03/06/2026Do you not think you have some audience from your "personal brand" (🤮)? I've enjoyed the books of yours I've read so far, the podcast, the writing bootcamps, and I'd genuinely be interested in reading whatever else pops out of your brain. I wonder how much of that is a neurodivergent thing. 110
