Sorry for the delayed response. Fyi, I did make my basic goal (not the stretch goal, but hey, take your victories where you can, right?) I had always wanted to write a novel imagining Poe's last days but during my teaching career I just never had time til now, a a different plot poured out!

Got a little kickstarter project and just days away from the end. There are some cool rewards if you like #horror and #edgarallanpoe. The story imagines where Poe's nightmares could have originated. Take a look if you will: www.kickstarter.com/projects/dav... #indiewriter #historicalfiction #edgar

What if Edgar Allan Poe's scariest stories were inspired by actual events that happened to him one summer when he was fifteen? EDGAR, a novel by David Allen Voyles, available on Amazon.

Spring's equinox brings delicate light, pouring around every curve to soothe her quaking bones. Heat, warm and sweet, should be bursting along rugged skin and teeming flesh. Yet she is starving, shaking, prickling. Her sigh puffs steam, boiling mountains, "blood will have to do." #HorrorWritersChat

#HorrorWritersChat The spell to move into a younger body was to be cast in "a time of perfect balance." The equinox. She held her breath as she watched the blood-red candle flicker and expire, but smiled hearing her granddaughter's gasp in the adjacent room.

#HorrorWritersChat Since I tend to write (and read) cosmic horror, I enjoy all the creative possibilities found in a genre not limited by a human understanding of reality. Plus, I think it's fun to dive into the human psyche and how it's affected by the unknowable.

No, I'll have to check that out! I actually freaked myself out with a cave scene in an episode that was about the The Bell Witch Cave. (Could have used one answer for 2 questions!)

I have a WIP in which the protagonist is in a subterranean cave, and she starts to hear tapping and bangs from above, but they're rhymical, like rudimentary music or a code. And imagining that did give me a chill, actually. #HorrorWritersChat

#HorrorWritersChat An isolated town in a winter storm suffers from an unknown power that is killing the residents in ways that reference Christmas carols. The scene in which the deputy discovers his family has been killed was nearly too much. from "The 13th Day of Christmas"

Amen to that! It's been hell trying to get this book recognized. We had a hurricane here in NC, too, right as my book was launched which didn't help, but frankly marketing is just the basic challenge as an indie writer. I've got to learn to let that go and just write.

I found myself thinking about this one a good bit. I'd agree, overall, but it gets overdone, right? I mean, if I see a cat (or a dog, but people seem to hate cats) in a movie, I know it's going to be killed. I have killed children in my stories, but I can't kill an animal. Not a rule, just being me

"They tell me when they trust me." I love that. And I'm always amazed when the story goes somewhere I hadn't expected even though I think I'm in control through all that planning!
110
David Allen Voyles @davidallenvoyles.bsky.social · 19/03/2025
#HorrorWritersChat As a boring ol' planner, I have to have backstory, even if it's not revealed in the story. It helps me know the characters better. But in regard to the plot, I keep it mysterious. The reader can have questions at the end and that's ok. Preferred even.

#HorrorWritersChat Horror can absolutely exist for its own sake. Totally fine with that. But having said that, I do find morality comes into play in my stories. Bad things happen to good people, but its how those good people react that makes them interesting to me. Also, it's fun creating evil!

I hope it's not more than I can really do. The first one went well, but I needed a break after it. (Maybe some short stories before tackling the second one. I love writing short stories.)

Hi, #HorrorWritersChat I write supernatural and cosmic horror. I've been in the writing doldrums for a year but FINALLY committing to the idea that my last novel will have two sequels. The three books will span Edgar Allan Poe's life with fictionalized, spooky ideas from his stories. First is done.

David Allen Voyles @davidallenvoyles.bsky.social · 12/03/2025
My choice would be Elmira Royster (who really was Edgar Allan Poe's girlfriend at 15) because she is brave, resourceful, and much more likely to kick ass than Edgar's other friend, Robert. (I'll cheat and say Edgar, himself, too, 'cause, of course.)

Routines are incredibly important. For a lot of reasons, but for writing it's almost a requirement. At least, for me. My brain has been messed up ever since the hurricane and the election. But I can feel myself turning back to, being pulled more accurately, to writing again.
