Most often called the Ruin of St Paul's, it is actually called Mater Dei. St Paul's was the name of the college of which it was a part. It was built between 1602 and 1640, and destroyed by fire in 1835. #travel #travelphotography #macau

Hiking glaciers alone is not something sensible people should do. Ah, but I was young and foolish then. This is Snæfellsjokul in Iceland circa 1985. At the time I thought this was the top. Google has since persuaded me that it wasn’t. #iceland #travel #photography #travelphotography

1/2 Unlike most guidebooks on Hong Kong, this one delves deep into a region that is often ignored yet filled with ancient monuments, picturesque monasteries, abandoned villages and a network of excellent hiking trails. More info in ALT txt #hongkong #travel #solotravel #travelphotography #history
https://hongkongpics.com/exploring-hong-kongs-new-territories/

While there is no shortage of books about Hong Kong, they all tread the same weary path of British colonialism, banks, shopping malls, restaurants and tall buildings, most of which are packed into a few square kilometres of the urban area. Very little has ever been written about Hong Kong’s New Territories let alone guidebooks that help visitors discover its many attractions.

This book addresses that shortfall by shining a spotlight on some of the area’s historic monuments and temples. It takes on some family-friendly hiking trails, explores abandoned villages and visits monasteries both ancient and modern. It also gives information on how everything can be easily visited using existing public transport.

Macaques have lived in Lop Buri since the late seventeenth century, They first moved into the old Khmer Phra Karn Shrine probably after their original habitat was cleared for crops. People believed them to be disciples of the Hindu god Kala and so left them in peace.

Over the years their numbers have swelled and there are now three distinct groups. A second group colonised the temple ruins of Phra Prang Sam Yot and a third, more dystopian group occupies an old disused market place. Squabbles have always been common but they reached new heights early in the pandemic when tourists dried up and along with them the supply of cola, candies and potato chips.

The locals have always put out spare fruit and vegetables for them so it is unlikely any of them went hungry. Indeed the diet has probably improved their health no end.

Wat Saket itself has a rather grisly past. In the early days, the dead were not allowed to be cremated within the city walls. Wat Saket was conveniently just outside. This was all well and good but when cholera epidemics hit the temple would be overwhelmed. Unable to cremate them fast enough bodies were left out in the open where they were dined on by a flock of vultures who took up residence on the crematorium roof.

Meet the neighbours. These are the descendants of buffalo that were abandoned when farmers left the fields to work in the factories as Hong Kong industrialised after WW2. Winter is not a good time for them, the grass dies and there is little to eat. Fortunately help is at hand and they wait patiently by the side of the track for it to arrive. The old bull on the right is nicknamed Naughty though I have no idea how he earned it.
