@david-peede.bsky.social talking about the relation between coalescent times and site patters under an introgressed genetic tree to introduce a new statistic D*. D* is an ILS agnostic test of introgression that performs best under unknown demography.

Introgression and parental conflict shape repeated occurrences of postzygotic isolation in Mimulus
Postzygotic reproductive isolation is often thought to accumulate as a byproduct of neutral divergence. Yet it frequently evolves rapidly, in line wit…

Delighted that our paper about the distribution of genomic spans of clades/edges in genealogies (ARGs), and using this for detecting inversions and other SVs (and other phenomena that cause local disruption of recombination) is out in MBE academic.oup.com/mbe/article/... (1/n)

Hybridization and introgression are major evolutionary processes. Since the 1940s, the prevailing view has been that they shape plants far more than animals. In our new study (www.science.org/doi/10.1126/... ), we find the opposite: animals exchange genes more, and for longer, than plants

An extraordinary story of archaic introgression🧬: a Denisovan haplotype, introgressed through Neanderthals, selected in the Americas, and linked to an expanded copy number of a tandem repeat. Congrats to @david-peede.bsky.social, Emilia, and the whole team! 👉 Enjoy the read: doi.org/10.1126/scie...

The MUC19 gene: An evolutionary history of recurrent introgression and natural selection
We study the gene MUC19, for which some modern humans carry a Denisovan-like haplotype. MUC19 is a mucin, a glycoprotein that forms gels with various biological functions. We find diagnostic variants ...

Thrilled to see this paper on MUC19 out. I feel honoured and priviledged to have witnessed this amazing project unfold. Read @fervillanea.bsky.social ’s thread and be prepared for a jaw-dropping story on introgression and selection, and best of all… in Native and Admixed Americans!!

Our paper on the evolution of MUC19 in humans, Neanderthals, and Denisovans is finally out today in Science! This has been a six-year effort by 13 authors to weave together 3 separate but related evolutionary stories around this one gene (more on thread 🧵). www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...

@david-peede.bsky.social et al on the convoluted route of a variant of the MUC19 gene: Denisovans (before going extinct) passed the gene to Neanderthals, who (before going extinct) passed it to ancient humans, who then crossed the Bering Strait. Today, 1 in 3 Mexicans carry the genetic variant.
The proposed evolutionary history of the MUC19 haplotype. A tree shows how the gene was likely passed from Denisovans to Neanderthals to modern humans, where it was preserved in Eurasian and American populations through positive natural selection. The Denisovan genomic region is contained within a larger Neanderthal genomic region.

It’s UNREAL 🤯 what imputation can reveal about archaic Introgression across space 🌎 and time ⏳, and I'm personally STOKED 🤩 to see what the imputation era of archaic introgression will uncover 👀
