The faces behind him... Whether it's a rally or in the Oval Office, don't watch him, watch those trapped standing as his props and backdrops as he goes on and on and far and wide... He inspires or interests no one anymore.

I've some mid-20thC editions of the Manual of Seamanship (my dad was Navy), so googled that title for the 19thC and got this, among others. It might give you categories of knowledge needed by those beginning the progression, making other material easier to evaluate.

This is clearly just a ploy by Putin to get Trump to pressure Ukraine to stop its attacks on Russian refineries. It carries virtually no economic benefit to the US (& can Russia even produce the fuel, far less supply it?). Putin dangled the bait of diesel, and Trump swallowed.

It's completely plausible that U.S.-operated Patriot systems could end up protecting Russian refineries, rather than Ukrainian neighbourhoods and hospitals… …and will the U.S. soon put sanctions on Ukraine to punish it for attacking U.S. "access to critical resources"? A world turned upside down…

But...will this mean Ukraine's strikes on Russia's petro infrastructure will now constitute what the last U.S. National Security Strategy called "Threats against our supply chains that risk U.S. access to critical resources"...? How will the U.S. partner with Russia to counter this "threat"?

Outrage in Kyiv's suburbs. Russia hits a kindergarten and its playground in broad daylight. The security camera shows it happened yesterday, but has only just been published. The man seen running escaped death by metres.

Mourning and clearing up in Zaporizhzhia today too. Six strikes on the city this morning resulted in the death of a 48 year old man. 12 others, including a child, were injured. Russia fired on a residential area, with one strike next to an after-school education facility.

'Albertans are divided. So is the UCP. And some of the separatists Smith once welcomed into her "big tent" party are now trying to remove her from office.' Really interesting narrative of how opportunistic "coalition building" can backfire, putting the fringe in control. An old, recurring story.

'Baking Flatbreads And
Tokochis In A Tandoor', Ella Maillart, Kyrgyzstan, 1932

A Kyrghyz woman seated cross-legged on the floor, wearing traditional headwear and everyday garments, carefully apportions and shapes dough pieces for traditional round flatbreads (tokoč/tokochi).

This traditional Central Asian flatbread is a regional variant of naan common across Kyrgyzstan and the wider Silk Road region.

In the foreground is the opening to a sunken hearth or clay oven (tonir/tandir/tandyr/tandoor) with several rounds of already baked circular breads stacked on a cloth nearby and inside the rim.

Yes, this is what will happen. And what survives won't be your country, at least as you thought it was. It will be something different and disappointing ― unless the people do rise up and prove us both wrong, and demand prosecutions and ruin businesses that collaborated. I hope…but doubt…

"We need a truth and reconciliation commission." No. You need a criminal justice system where "the people are represented by two separate yet equally important groups: the police who investigate crime, and the district attorneys who prosecute the offenders." Reconciliation can wait. Justice first.
