DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 12hindeed our artifacts are storytellers, what looks like mundane objects to many, are important tools and time travel devices. hope all the items find just the right nook and all the artistic pursuits, hobbies, (a)vocations, amusements, and archives bring you the (non-cliché'd) joy 000
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 19hjust fired up actual computer to tidy up and rearrange a bit (Doing this kind of stuff on phone is a suboptimal) There's always items I didn't quite keep organized but that's why i make these things hope to hear what you think about the talk daveostory.com/speaking-pre...daveostory.com“This is not my first apocalypse” ~ spiel at the planetarium round-up – Dave Olson's Creative Life Archive 010
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 07/10/2026due to family circumstances, I moved schools a lot growing up in different countries/geographies but was all just "normal public schools" so starting over a new environment with cliques and cultures and customs wasn't always easy (helped make me charming however :-)) 120
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 07/10/2026with my kid starting in elementary school, options havebeen on my mind as healed very likely be the only multicultural kid in his school and I don't ever want him to feel uncomfortable unnecessarily 210
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 07/10/2026that's great to hear, here in Okayama, it seems there are international schools for young learners though nothing for older kids ~ although there's a variety of private universities (including international Pacific University which is mostly a sports school) but nothing kind of in between 120
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 07/10/2026The place that I've seen have names like Harrow, Rugby etc. And not the "multipurpose friendly international school Japan… These are full on ship your kid off and see once every three months. I find it a little confusing and offputting, very different than the usual international schools 010
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 07/10/2026I wonder who the clientele are? (realize there is a subset of high net worth foreign business people families in Tokyo+ yet shipping kid off to that kind of experience (esp if already in foreign country) seems very unpleasant). Who else are targets? What is big benefit? I'd miss my son terribly :( 010
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 07/10/2026our son starts elementary school next year and the only plan is to go to local public schools however *certain algorithms* are constantly pushing me "British boarding school experiences available in Japan" ads / all seem rather cold & bit odd in their marketing (most located in remote-ish Tohoku) 210
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 07/10/2026I think discussion of masters/graduate degrees or whatever being available from *reputable universities* online, from Canada or otherwise would be a really interesting topic Also the pros and cons of international schools for multicultural families in Japan is intriguing 220
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 07/10/2026{+ note: this is the same laptop that I published thousands of post with before, simply using Safari, nothing processor intensive, basically just using it like a text editor so I'm not sure why so arduous} But hey go look at fun dossier, watch the talk, look at snaps, share with pals, click things 000
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 07/10/2026(problem is: building/writing on combo old iphone. older iPad and even older macbook :( None seem adequate though it's very basic work #WordPress has become such a clumsy duct tape together steaming pile that sucks fun out of blogging & archiving (especially the "apps" are terrible) / frustrated 100
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 07/10/2026finally made a round up post about "this isn't my first apocalypse" spiel Vancouver planetarium back in July ~ video, lovely photos, more links, odd screenshots, podcast interview, ancillary annotations bit messy but anyway, sneak preview if you're curious daveostory.com/speaking-pre...daveostory.com“This is not my first apocalypse” ~ spiel at the planetarium round-up – Dave Olson's Creative Life Archive 221
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 07/10/2026yeah it's tough to think about those kind of class of musicians who don't end up necessarily with a lot of publishing royalties and kind of lose the cachet of their name. Probably same thing with the new Bohemians who were a crack outfit but became the side act without the front person 010
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 07/10/2026also related to one of your topics, I have daydreamed about getting an MFA and creative writing just to do it (as thought would do decades ago) although would require me dropping my cynicism crust about *those types of writers* ;) i'm a renegade outsider poet after all ha ha 110
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 07/10/2026PS about weight loss, I dropped 5 kg during the trip to Canada but on a very much not recommended diet plan 🏥🤮 Pps I'm 170cm and hovering around 70kg Had got a little bit soft and chubby for a few years after a kid was born but tightened up caloric intake cause can't exercise per se 110
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 07/10/2026Best views, most mellow and in this case of power outlet ;) #ProMove 010
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 07/10/2026and her and the other 9,999 maniacs introduced many (younger) people to Jack Kerouac and Allen Ginsberg et al (The rest of the band was really fantastic honestly was disappointed when they went separate ways as often happens when the singer becomes the star) 130
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 07/10/2026funny enough I just gone over to the podcast feed and listen to a totally different one, came back to comment here and let this one flow just into my ears playing within the Bluesky app. Short version: double dose of Kevin back to back. Enjoyed the stories filling in the gaps and so on 110
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 07/10/2026by the way come out while I see your dispatches on YouTube, I'm definitely an audio first preference type. It's much easier for my eyes to let my brain wander with goodness in my ears 010
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 07/10/2026PS thanks for the name check and I am giving you a hat tip right back from a cool dark room still in recovery mode. Thanks for keeping me company. Take care of that sniffle 210
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 06/10/2026while it seems like the letter & field notes traveled only from Okayama to your home up coast, truth is everything from letterhead to typewriter to ink stamps and manifest all have stories within each hiccuping galloping fragment. Now you are a part of the story (again) is there a favourite riff? 030
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 05/10/2026One of these months or years… In fact today at doctors, told me about an institute in Tokyo doing real unique research about ME/CFS. So might end up in the area next year but hospital treatments and late night storytelling don't always mix :-) I'll keep sending letters 110
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 05/10/2026Will be bundled with your own sheet of holy donkeys stationery (to continue the story) and a wallet size snapshot of a watercolor of the world peace stupa & lake Thewa in Pokhara from a very real window, and of course just the right envelope, stamps & code for companion spoken word plus guitar audio 000
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 05/10/2026some printer proofs from "Dave O dispatch volume three" a double sided barn-door trifold featuring a *possibly undelivered/refused* love letter aerogramme from Nepal, August 1, 1973 + with a still life from a desk at the (possibly real) "holy donkeys" Annapurna guesthouse with poetry and flowers 110
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 05/10/2026not for me but I think a good topic is: if you were a 22 year-old Canadian or otherwise looking to switch up your life in Asia, what's your advice about the questions to ask about where to go, how to work, how to manage logistics including "stuff back home" 020
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 05/10/2026The steely look behind your sunglasses and stern smile intrigues me so I'll definitely have to listen/watch ;) 120
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 05/10/2026so sweet of you JJ, truly appreciate it. also meant to thank you gratefully for taking the time to watch video from the talk "this ain't my first apocalypse" in #Vancouver. There was a handout distributed to the audience (typewritten of course ;)) will set one aside for you 120
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 05/10/2026todays riding bus to hospital outfit / mostly burnt orange with tan & shades of link/beige/yellow rolling back seat #peace 280
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 04/10/2026also love whenever his "few buddies" appears guest on shows, they still flex his Canadian college championship with Lethbridge and I don't know 1984 or something as his top achievement 010
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 04/10/2026i'm usually colossally annoyed with TV but whenever feel blue, re-watch the last episode of "the marvelous Mrs. Maisel" ps there's a show called "my so-called life" want to watch because Buffalo Tom did some soundtrack songs but haven't actually made an effort to find it 010
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 04/10/2026not only related to above / a friendly hello and thank you from a provincial corner of Japan for your thoughtful, prolific and enjoyable coverage of season number 56 (depending on how you count 'em with the missing one and whatnot) {photo from Olympia WA for decoration, not current} 020
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 02/10/2026whilst in bed of late, sent so many postcards, letters & long-form electronic mails ~ always seeking substantialness also send 2 typewriters by kuroneko for repair from (what must be a fascinating) shop in Kobe 030
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 02/10/2026back on the bus, to hospital (outfit = greens) watching rice fields turn into pre-fab houses towers go up & fave noodle shop across street closes always seeking community hubs & human hangs (beyond postoffices) lucky charms to. e good 'citizen' 060
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 02/10/2026getting folks to pick up w/o calendared scheduled slot and bullet point agenda is tough ;) 010
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 02/10/2026about same but taller grass & sign saying "stay up bug/ weed killer" :( 000
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 02/10/2026hope you had a chance to watch ~ was kinda big deal for me <3 110
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 02/10/2026I send hundreds of postcards and letters per year and just sent two typewriter out for repair (I also spend much of my life in bed due to a chronic and complex illness so often look at channels simply for companionship) 010
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 02/10/2026for anyone lurking, a couple of my talks were recorded and archived in audio with annotations, snapshots etc. at my personal creative life archive. #ControlYourOwnMedia 010
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 02/10/2026oh my goodness, just reading the "due to changes in blah" and the wind down of the publishing program. While i wasn't a student, was a guest lecturer several times and thought it was the most interesting program going - the *changes in publishing* make this program even more important :( 210
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 01/10/2026and gutted local sports radio in every city besides Toronto ~ empty airways are sad (and radio hosts scrambling to start YouTube channel sponsored by sports betting operations make me queasy) 010
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 01/10/2026there's a great *younger* candidate named Richard Loat running for school board in West Vancouver. He has a very interesting international backstory which keeps on bringing him back to Vancouver. I know you got plenty to talk about but he's a candidate that deserves a bit of a spark 010
DaveO @daveo.bsky.social · 30/09/2026The only acceptable answer is going around Stanley Park loop with the cup being pulled in a red radio flyer wagon. No cars, busses etc. Just casual strolling, skateboarding, bicycles/unicycles acceptable… And oh right, roller blades What could possibly go wrong? 020
