It’s a devolved matter when it would be awkward to support action with the core Labour vote

We had one cyclist death in Glasgow where, when I was asked to look through the Gobike sent emails by lawyers, I found my predecessor had called out the exact danger at that exact junction. The needed work didn't happen until after a woman was dead.

Somehow, the city produced almost the only area in Scotland with a 30% fall in traffic, huge support from schools and senior medics amongst others, really minimal impact on adjacent roads per the council’s own figures, and now has overturning SUVs on the bike bus route.

It feels like in the run up to the next council election some kind of info site that mines all the minutes, motions and amendments would be a handy public resource

I feel like for this to add up there would have needed to be a motion backed by the convener which didn’t rip out elements of the low traffic neighbourhood but that doesn’t seem to be on the agenda

So just to be completely clear, if Scott had won the vote, as his motion still reopened the rat run, it’s not really accurate to say he would or could have saved it?

My recollection of the vote Scott’s referring to is that the administration wanted to rip stuff out /and/ have a talking shop, but that he didn’t present a “keep the scheme intact” motion for anyone to vote on. Happy to be corrected though

Whether or not one supports road safety schemes, it’s a major issue that politicians can simply adopt opposite, or at best misleading, positions down the line.

Are the transcripts of these meetings still available? Feels like Claude needs to do some fact checking at scale

A small number of angry drivers / pandering politicians had enough incentive to get the council to remove a years-old quiet neighbourhood scheme. The same concentration of power doesn’t exist in the diffuse body of local people who would like not to have overturning SUVs in their street

Just to put this in context Edinburgh airport alone offers more than a million seats on transatlantic flights per year, roughly ten times more than the entire saving from walking and wheeling

She could stand as an independent and see if she can split the vote there ;)

I think they can be potentially prosecuted for obstruction or construction and use offences or whatever, but in reality how many of these novelty offences go to court each year? It’s not loads

This is great. A huge negative influence as a councillor who can be completely irrelevant as an MP

Luxury retailers want taxpayers to fund a 20% tax break for foreign tourists. They paid consultancy Cebr to claim this will raise £2.6bn for the UK. That convinced Sadiq Khan and Kemi Badenoch. But it's false: a free lunch. Four basic errors mask a £600m loss. Thread:

There’s no offence relating to zig zags here. The vehicle has to be inside the controlled area bounded by the zig zag lines, alas

With the Strait of Hormuz closed, Iraq has resorted to moving its oil across the desert to Syria in hundreds of tanker trucks, in true Mad Max style. From there, it will be shipped to worldwide markets.

Even the geometry of the access roads and car park are flawed. Honestly you could write an essay about all this stuff

As a brand new school, this should have been significantly more accessible without cars. Instead, the traffic it generates practically guarantees that I don’t take my kids except in the car, or if we have time for a 40 min round trip on foot.

Looks like they substantially reallocated road space rather than running the tram “in” traffic too

If the priority is to increase the number of houses being built, there must be more direct incentives/taxes than simply using the public purse to prop up prices? How about a state-owned house builder with a first refusal right on banked land?

Isn’t the power to proscribe these reserved to Westminster? Why not pass a bill to make it a requirement to register all these vehicles properly with the DVLA even if intended for use on private land? Then they’d be sold with a v5 and tracking of the keeper.

I cycled to work at the Shore via leith walk the other day (I usually go Holyrood park - Easter road) and at every light there were 15 cyclists waiting to go up the way. It's brilliant, love the voi bikes contribution to this!

The wardens can’t ticket you. In principle the police could be called and via the procurator fiscal you could be hauled up on an obstruction charge I’m sure, but I think that’s quite theoretical to these guys

In theory you could be ticketed for parking on the zigzags, but this is so rarely enforced that I’m not sure on a given day if even a single NIP is sent out

Dave McCraw @davemccraw.bsky.social · 24/09/2026
Scotland’s pavement parking law can only be enforced if your *tyre* is on the pavement, so you can not be ticketed for this, which is not lost on a growing number of people 🧑‍🔬

It might take ten minutes to cross the road to the bus setup stop but at least it’s caused by good honest cars

Edinburgh, where a six lane road doesn’t have room for active travel, but somehow the bus lane is storing a single car, and more than half the pavement can be used by a business as “permitted development” Criticism handled by gaslighting you to the Lothian Rd Boulevard project, coming around 2045

I've long moaned that when the tram was installed, no parallel cycle track was laid to allow "park and ride" into the city by bike. Will this new access road be a private car frenzy which only embeds this further, or an uncharacteristic departure that also provides active travel connectivity? Ha!

In Edinburgh many tram stops are DOUBLE FLOATING, you have to cross the tram, bus, taxi, and cycle traffic whichever way you turn.

It’s like the funding thing. They should offer multi year funding streams that are beyond reproach but just sized to their pocket, instead they create the opportunity for Labour councils to say that the reason you don’t have a safer road is SNP funding methodology

Dave McCraw @davemccraw.bsky.social · 19/09/2026
The strangest thing about this is that it’s a pure vote loser. Only councils would actually be under fire for implementing a driving levy, but some Holyrood voters may sway against the SNP because of the narrative (Scott Arthur style) that they’re blocking climate action.

In England you can use the free National Dashcam safety portal to submit footage to every force, and this is used to prosecute untold thousands of dangerous drivers, but would also be the perfect mechanism for reports of anything else including dodgy motorbike use. Of course, we refuse it.

Spring cleaning and found this from Etape Caledonia 2016... the only time I tried this route as I found it too cramped with other riders. 21st of ~3000, simpler times!

I meant more like across the junction itself. I feel like I’ve seen drivers using this to anticipate the double laning
110
Dave McCraw @davemccraw.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
Did you capture much of the approach further to the south? I noticed that they didn’t protect the lane on either side of Sciennes jn, where I always used to find drivers would queue in the bike lane
210
Dave McCraw @davemccraw.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
… and you would bin the right filter lane if exit only, giving an extra lane worth of width that bit sooner on junction approach
120
Dave McCraw @davemccraw.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
It would have been preferable to have exit only traffic too, as there’s a significant right hook risk for northbound cyclists that you could mitigate this way PLUS you could make a really tight continuous footway with no radiusing / rapid entry worries.

Not related to Scott, but I only realised the community space place in Juniper Green even existed through a third party, because they’d blocked me on socials when they set theirs up. Some Tory link I guess. I’m permanently boycotting it in secret 🤫
