I don’t believe that “too much Julian Cope” is actually a thing.

The jetstream must be pretty strong. There's a flight from JFK that's having to hang around above Aylesbury. I'm assuming it's because LHR isn't open yet.

I don't see any problem with that. It seems very respectful to me.

Have got a stinky cold and sore throat so went to Lidl to get some cake for breakfast to cheer myself up. Got cake. Also came home with a panettone (not to be opened before 23rd December), and this nice box of soothing drinks.

I remember going to the supermarket with my then 11 month old sat in the trolley. I remember turning away and then looking back to find he'd grabbed a mesh bag of babybels from the trolley and was chewing his way through them. He had red wax all down his chin 😄 Enjoy every silly moment.

My sons are all grown up now but some of my most treasured memories are of reading bedtime stories to them. I really don't understand why anyone would willingly choose not to do that. And then brag about it on the internet afterwards? That's just... I have no words.

Would help if someone were to sort out the issues with retirement accommodation. Estates are often stuck with an asset that has lots of restrictions. The press is full of horror stories

There are usually loads of Gloverall duffle coats on Vinted here in the UK. A duffle is an excellent bit of kit. I have one for winter dog walks, great for wearing with lots of layers and the voluminous pockets hold all the dog paraphernalia.

Could we have famous "hamsters" on the 50p coins? SPG and Basil are two that come to mind.

I remember KC of the 90s and it was pretty dodgy. So, when my youngest son was at halls in Cartwright Gardens in 2021-22 I was pretty astonished at the change in the whole area. Way nicer than back then. I couldn't imagine someone leaving a supercar parked in front of the old BR offices.

That pretty much what the weather app says about here in Berkshire. I wore a light coat at lunchtime when walking the dog but that was to keep the drizzle off rather than to keep warm. I'd describe it as pleasantly cool out after the last five months of boiling hot weather.

Must be colder in London than out here in the shires. My draughty thirties semi is still toasty.

The true sign that autumn has arrived in this household is when my cat starts sleeping inside again. In summertime he prefers to sleep in our garden under a shrub. He started sleeping inside at the weekend.

It's the turning of the seasons. How do I know? Barney is sleeping indoors again rather than in the bushes underneath the magnolia at the front of the house.

Sooo, my son has a carbon bike that he commutes daily with and has done for a couple of years. I don't think he gives a monkey's about aerodynamics nor what it's made from. He just loves how light it is. Considering how many bits he's replaced on it, I don't think the maintenance is an issue.

I'm not denying there's a need for improved defences against drones and hypersonic missiles. But we are struggling to keep enough operational F-35s, and don't even start on the Ajax armoured vehicle programme. Unless we can get better procurement, this is an expensive disaster waiting to happen.
010
Dave Lauchlan @davelauchlan.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Given the MoD's woeful record on procurement over the last decade and a half, I'm not sure I'd boast that the latest boondoggle is the brainchild of a former Conservative minister for procurement. This is the aircraft carriers and armoured vehicles all over again Ker-ching if you are BAe!

Come to Reading for the Tapestry. Then, get a pint at the Monk's Retreat or The Alehouse. Wander up to MERL and see some smocks. On your way back to the station , take a detour to Castle Street and get a pie from Sweeney's to take home for your tea. You won't get stuck behind any tourists.

The Tories managed to go billions over budget on two aircraft carriers. We struggle to keep enough RAF fighters in service. Call me cynical but the Tories claim to be able to put in place a decent missile defence system for £10B sounds like BS. www.theguardian.com/politics/liv...

Just come to Reading and see our full size replica of the Bayeux Tapestry. The Town Museum is free entry, only a few minutes walk from the station. Also features a fantastic room showing Roman artefacts dug up at Silchester, and a room of rather creepy taxidermy. It will be quieter than the BM.

Don't give Kemi ideas. Just leave them in a file on your computer so she has to hack in and steal them instead. Make her work for her next stupid policy.

The superpower I gained from being a parent (of two now adult sons so we must have done something right) is being able to ignore crying from other people's children. It's literally not my problem. (I do feel sympathy for the parents usually trying to placate the child - I'm not a monster!)

Yep, I don't count as English by Suella's definition thanks to my Glaswegian Dad and Irish maternal Grandfather. (This despite the fact that my great to the 16th grandfather Edward Rogers served on the Privy Council of Elizabeth the First and has a portrait in the National Portrait Gallery)

Connections is such an amazing series. I recommend the books and especially the audiobooks of @jonnelledge.bsky.social and @edconway.bsky.social in particular. Closest I've found to the modern equivalents. (Traitors has its place , great Friday night TV after a rubbish week at work)

I can't rewatch Silent Running because it always has me in bits at the end. I can't even listen to "Rejoice in the Sun" without welling up. I don't think Marvel has a hope of matching that.

And she's got no personal experience of what Britain was like before and during Thatcher, especially away from the south of England.

Dave Lauchlan @davelauchlan.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Excuse my French but Kemi knows f*ck all about Thatcher's impact on Britain. She spent the start of her career working in the south of England and in the services boom of the early 2000s. And she has hitched her wagon to a party that has destroyed any gains from that period.

Yeah I'm with Vodafone ,on their Full Fibre 500 for £29/month. They had to dig a trench to install the fibre to the house, didn't cost me a penny. Irony is, the actual company providing the BB is BT Openreach. Don't feel too bad about not switching before. Life's busy. Good luck.
