Maybe this is not possible, I don't know. If not, then we have to have some kind of plan to at least stabilize the hotter world we've created. And adapt and encourage a biodiverse planet in the new conditions that are now emerging.

When I see naked, barren glaciers, when I think about ocean acidification and warming, when I think about how much ice is being lost — it's overwhelming. We are already in dangerous territory. Stopping warming is not enough. There has to be a plan to turn things around.

I understand the timetables for dwarf conventional policy planning. But maybe what needs to change is our perspective in maintaining a habitable planet, in being guardians of habitable conditions.

I don't think there are easy or quick fixes. I think solar radiation management is far too dangerous to deploy. I'm talking about some kind of holistic plan where our descendants (one day) can enjoy an ice-filled Arctic.

Dave-Inder Comar @daveindercomar.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
Is the point to just live on a much hotter world? We owe it to our descendants to seek some kind of return to humanity's 'climate niche' and the stable and cooler conditions of the Holocene. Even if this takes thousands of years to get there (or longer).

Dave-Inder Comar @daveindercomar.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
In international law, there is wide agreement that States are under a legal obligation to stop dangerous levels of warming, and must cooperate immediately to do the same. But there is little discussion about returning to a planet that resembles the Holocene. This is a major oversight.

I've been shocked that there isn't greater outcry over the sanctions against the International Criminal Court. Sanctioning international judges who are doing their job to enforce international law is an attack on Nuremberg. Directly relevant to international climate law in so many ways.

The science of planetary boundaries provides meaningful context for climate policy, and I look to both when thinking about global policy responses. What's missing today is any kind of meaningful global governance framework to maintain Holocene-like conditions and stay within those boundaries.

I think the hardest part about climate policy is getting people to viscerally understand how hot it's going to get. People have trouble comprehending that each year (gets hotter than the last more or less), and in 5, 10, 15, 30 years the levels of heat dramatically will change day-to-day life.

Dave-Inder Comar @daveindercomar.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
In my dissertation (almost done) I argue that international law must develop the idea of the "post-Holocene." The Holocene stability which supported the rise of States and a legal order is ending. When I read headlines like this I get quite sad about what we're losing

We are greatly underestimating the impacts of climate in the coming years, at least as a policy matter. Wealthy countries like Switzerland are not prepared. I think for many people in rich countries climate change is a "them" problem. Vulnerable countries like islands face existential risks soon.

It saddens me how much the US has walked away from climate. And how silent both culture and politics have become on addressing global warming. We need a major political program that can connect the dots on cost of living, climate, and endless war. And which can connect to human rights protections

Dave-Inder Comar @daveindercomar.bsky.social · 28/09/2026
A just transition to stop warming will require dramatic changes to the way we live in high-emissions societies. This transition is a cultural and political project. We'll probably work much less, eat less meat on average, and have far more free time. More spending on health and education.

I wish rule-of-law scholars would focus more on the US Supreme Court. Its hyper political nature, lack of accountability mechanisms, and lifetime appointments all reflect a judicial body that sits well outside accepted rule-of-law norms. This is a major component of the democratic crisis in the US

This El Niño will devastate the lives of millions. And it's just the beginning. Like the coronavirus pandemic, few people take the effort to truly think through non-linear impacts. Aggressive measures today are the only way to prevent catastrophe in 10 years. 2°C by mid century is a catastrophe.

I have mixed feelings about treating climate policy as "national security". National security is the bucket that seems to get the most policy dollars. But climate change is so many other things—a human rights crisis, a cost of living crisis, a health crisis. Also a democracy crisis.

Trump's wars of aggression, outrageous energy policies, and destruction of the domestic economy should be fertile soil for a vision of US economic renewal that is in balance with the environment, that is healthier, that promotes genuine well being. I would love to see this better articulated ⭐

Part of the reason I support ecocide laws is that I don't think our world will change until there are meaningful consequences, including criminal consequences, associated with environmental destruction. A well-enforced ecocide law in NY or CA could truly change the world in my view.

There is a terrible social and political necrosis in our political systems at present. There is a void of positive thinking, of transformative thinking. We will not make it without a new vision as powerful as decolonization or Abolition in the 19th century.

This is in many respects a call for a new form of self-determination as profound as decolonization after World War II. Decolonial leaders in the Global South recognized the need for a new international order. We need this kind of vision today.

All the solutions needed to stop warming are here, but they are not implemented because of an increasingly ecocidal economic order. Just as the New International Economic Order could see another way, countries bit and small must band together to see something else.

Right now, many countries are raising alarm about the future of the means of subsistence. Fisheries and farmland are being lost. Critical resources are threatened from climate impacts. The amount of funding to assist such countries is paltry, even insulting.

The international economic system is at the heart of the current crisis. Financial systems are incentivized to keep funding fossil fuel infrastructure. Wealthy countries refuse to implement a robust clean energy transformation. Critical financial and tech transfers to vulnerable States never happen

Decades ago, the non-aligned movement and G77 insisted on a "New International Economic Order" that would create a fairer and more equitable international economic system. This kind of movement united a variety of countries to envision something new. This kind of vision is needed today in climate 🧵

Truly addressing climate change will require introspection in wealthy countries about 'the good life,' how we define success, and the wealth gaps between rich and poor. There is no magic tech that will stop the crisis. Social and cultural change represent the most effective forms of climate action

Dave-Inder Comar @daveindercomar.bsky.social · 10/09/2026
One of the most important climate levers we have in wealthy, high-emissions countries is social and cultural change. Reducing energy use, meat consumption, ecological restoration, more time off, investments in health and education, wealth/income measures — these are all forms of climate action.
