Now that everyone is getting excited about the release of the uncut version of The Devils, here’s a photo of an original Spanish poster that I picked up a few years ago. I really should get it framed.

Sadly an under seen film, but it’s hugely impressive, bold and resonant. It seems to be missing from most streaming services, at least in the UK, but it is on Amazon Prime.

Plus the news, not just an April Fool prank, that Near Dark will get a UHD release from @synapsefilms. I can soon retire my DVD. So three of my most wished for releases are on the horizon.

First we get the very welcome news that THE DEVILS full cut is coming out via BFI and Warners. And now LAST SUMMER is announced on blu ray. It’s an amazing and unsettling film from Frank and Eleanor Perry, the couple behind The Swimmer, that many thought would never get released.

Directors Helene Cattet and Bruno Forzani interviewed by Peter Strickland this evening at the @princecharlescinema.com. My second viewing of Reflections in a Dead Diamond and I saw so much more detail and meaning this time. A female Diabolik laced with hints of Death in Venice. Brilliant fun.

Laura Dern this evening at the bfi introducing David Lynch’s INLAND EMPIRE on what would have been his 80th birthday. She came across so very positive and sweet, with fond memories of working with Lynch. The first time I’ve seen it on the big screen in 19 years.

At 90 years old, Peter Watkins death yesterday was hardly unexpected but it’s still sad that such an astonishing and bold film maker is still on the margins in our culture. His intelligent, often challenging and innovative films are unique. Here’s an obit: www.bfi.org.uk/features/pet...

David Cronenberg’s THE SHROUDS is surprisingly effective as both a personal meditation on grief and also an almost absurdist comedy. Like the best of speculative sci fi, it’s a reflection of contemporary concerns, and is very much a film about ideas.

This nugget says a lot: “in keeping with its idiosyncratic way of operating, they’ve had to call in a ghost hunter to investigate the source of a mystery flood that has been blighting the building. It turns out that the cinema is home to numerous ghosts, but none are responsible for water damage.”

I’ve been really enjoying the Jacques Rivette season at the ICA and today’s treat Pont Du Nord was another highlight. A conspiracy mystery set in Paris (what else?), this had a spritely wit and inventiveness that made it a joy from start to finish.
