Creating a place where all your papers (or whatever) are in one place is very useful. I often go to author websites to find links to working paper or open-access versions of published, subscription-only papers that I may not have access to (very common).

I'm not invested in the economics Nobel, but I'm also not convinced it's any more or less worthy than any other Nobel.

I agree, and I also laugh at the "The economics Nobel isn't real" argument, as if Alfred Nobel was the ultimate global arbiter of what is worth rewarding. It's not like the other Nobels were chosen by some global committee. It's just stuff this one guy thought was high impact.

There are questions I've thought about where we have, for example, one RCT and five quasi-experimental studies that I find credible. I'm perfectly happy with putting more weight on the RCT. But if I ignore the other studies completely, then I feel like I'm leaving a lot of knowledge on the table.
020
David Evans @daveevansphd.bsky.social · 18/06/2026
I just believe in drawing on a wide range of evidence, including a wide range of credible causal evidence. In my own synthesis work I try to do that. And I value other synthesis work that does that.
120
David Evans @daveevansphd.bsky.social · 18/06/2026
I don't disagree that they're the gold standard for causal inference! I've made that argument in pitches to policymakers and funders many times.

David Evans @daveevansphd.bsky.social · 18/06/2026
Don't get me wrong. I've done lots of RCTs, hopefully will do many more. No hater here.
020
David Evans @daveevansphd.bsky.social · 18/06/2026
But if you the question is "what do we know about X?" and then one says "I'm only going to draw on RCTs and I'm going to draw conclusions about what we know about X" then I think it implicitly implies that other evidence doesn't merit consideration. Maybe I'm being too harsh!
250
David Evans @daveevansphd.bsky.social · 18/06/2026
I don't think the authors are intentionally claiming that RCTs are the only valid info.
120
David Evans @daveevansphd.bsky.social · 18/06/2026
Wait, so you've seen a review on a topic (e.g., what do we know about effective agricultural extension) that only uses studies with RDs? or IVs? (Not denying, just isn't familiar to me.) I think I've almost exclusively seen single-method reviews focus on "what we learn from RCTs on X".

I learn a lot from RCTs, and I learn a lot from other types of studies. I propose that it is disingenuous to claim you value evidence from a range of methods (i.e., the best evidence for the question) and then exclusively cite evidence from one method. onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/full/10....
