Dave Douglas Gifts Trio with Camila Meza and Kate Gentile

Thursday 6th February, 5:30 pm
Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club
47 Frith St/Soho/London/W1D 4HT

Inspired by the life and music of Charles Lloyd, Gifts Trio reflects on the wisdom, vision, and positivity of the composer and saxophonist in an innovative way, notably exploring Lloyd’s fascination with the music of Billy Strayhorn.

The trio’s sound focuses on song form, emphasizing textural and timbral enhancement in service of each song. For this occasion, Douglas will be joined by two of the most innovative musicians on the current landscape, guitarist Camila Meza and drummer Kate Gentile, both wide-ranging masters of dynamics and intensity.

Line-up
Dave Douglas – trumpet
Camila Meza – guitar/voice
Kate Gentile – drums

Dave Douglas is a prolific trumpeter, composer, and educator known for the stylistic breadth of his work, the lyricism and wide-ranging curiosity of his music and for keeping a diverse set of ensembles and projects active simultaneously. Douglas’ career spans more than 60 unique original recordings as a leader and more than 500 published works.

Camila Meza is a Chilean jazz guitarist, singer, and songwriter. Meza is musically inspired by jazz guitarists like George Benson and Pat Metheny as well as being influenced by South American music and folk. She first studied with Jorge Vidal and Jorge Díaz.

Kate Gentile is a Brooklyn-based drummer and composer who has been active in the NYC jazz and creative music scenes since 2011. Her recent work as a leader includes biome i.i (Obliquity 2023), an album-length piece commissioned by and performed with International Contemporary Ensemble, and the triple album Find Letter X with her band of the same name, featuring Jeremy Viner, Kim Cass and Matt Mitchell.
