dathen @dathen.bsky.social · 04/09/2026The opposite of ‘enticement with wealth’ is happening too: Tom squanders most of Edmund’s inheritance at the beginning of the book, so Miss Crawford is constantly conflicted abt if she can handle living a modest life by marrying him. The family is tightening their belts financially too. 010
dathen @dathen.bsky.social · 04/09/2026Yeah this doesn’t really track with what I just read at all. Everyone is tripping over themselves to get near them, and the only stakes for the entire climax of the book are the tarnishing of their extremely good name. The near-crisis mid book is if the neighbors heard they were putting on a play. 110

dathen @dathen.bsky.social · 03/09/2026adding this exact delivery of “and then he was crAAZy in a 😱SPOOKY WAY👻” to my personal lexicon 051
dathen @dathen.bsky.social · 02/09/2026I finished reading it last night and immediately hunted down essays to figure out where the “confronting slavery” idea came from, and it mostly stems from people personally disliking Sir Thomas (while the narrative is hell-bent on insisting he’s a Good Person) 000
dathen @dathen.bsky.social · 02/09/2026the screenshots are the parts people constantly quote about it “addressing slavery” just bc the word is mentioned, but just because something is depicted doesn’t mean it’s inherently being criticized, no matter how much we wish it were. 100
dathen @dathen.bsky.social · 02/09/2026Oh it references them throughout, but in the same way you’d reference going to the office or going to London. It clearly establishes that he’s a slaver, then goes back to praising him endlessly. 100
dathen @dathen.bsky.social · 02/09/2026it’s class war but taking the side of the rich. The adaption changes a ton, but the book dedicates several chapters on going on and on abt how Mansfield is heaven and perfection compared to the “evils” of her noisy inferior lower-class family. 000
dathen @dathen.bsky.social · 02/09/2026I just finished this book, and their neighbors admire them until the scandal at the very end? where are you getting “their neighbors look down on them”? 000
dathen @dathen.bsky.social · 02/09/2026the segment where Fanny returns home, where her mother is villainized for being poor and lower-class in contrast to the glory and perfect manners of Mansfield, adds even more worship to the slave-produced wealth 000
dathen @dathen.bsky.social · 02/09/2026the problem is the book doesn’t *treat* them as villains. Sir Thomas, the slave-owner, is constantly revered as the pinnacle of morality, and other loathsome characters like Edmund are the Ultimate Goal for the main character to yearn for 100
dathen @dathen.bsky.social · 02/09/2026found this when looking up an article, and..how do you come to that conclusion from this exchange? nothing about it implies Fanny was criticizing him, and the “he wishes his daughters took pleasure in his information like I did!” aligns it more with her asking about her brother’s sailing ship 100
dathen @dathen.bsky.social · 02/09/2026OH THESE ARE BEAUTIFUL WOW i was hyped out of my mind to find a hardcover of book 1 (my favorite) at the library bookstore, but the cover was dull as dirt. look at that ART!! 110

dathen @dathen.bsky.social · 02/09/2026it was the last austen book I hadn’t read so I forced myself through it and. it’s the first classic that I’ve actively hated. The heights of Even Worse it achieves just in the last few chapters and *last few pages* are staggering. 010
dathen @dathen.bsky.social · 02/09/2026Edmund: Well I DID practically raise my cousin so I know she sufficiently confirms with my morals…she’ll make the perfect rebound! 000
dathen @dathen.bsky.social · 02/09/2026like if you made a bare bones summary of the story there are so many things you THINK it could be saying, but reading the actual text and it’s so loudly blatantly the opposite 000
dathen @dathen.bsky.social · 02/09/2026I just finished this book tonight and was hoping for this kind of conclusion, and was catastrophically let down by the segment where Fanny goes to stay with her birth family and spends several chapters deifying Mansfield Park as truly heaven vs this Low Class Scumpit 100
dathen @dathen.bsky.social · 02/09/2026comments like this got my hopes up for the book “addressing slavery” and the only line mentioning it is immediately followed by how moral the slave-owner is. I don’t think that counts as “addressing slavery” 010
dathen @dathen.bsky.social · 02/09/2026I have a montage of confused disbelief at how at the point of the book you’d have a “half agony half hope” confession from one of the other Austen Men, he was still gushing at Fanny for pages on end about how he eternally loves her rival 100
dathen @dathen.bsky.social · 02/09/2026He’s INSUFFERABLE. He was kind early on, but is absolutely spineless for all the “so moral!!” hype the book gives him. He goes beyond imperceptive—it’s almost fascinating with how he constructs a fake version of every other character in his mind and will die on the hill that’s Really Them 110
