Apropos of nothing... An earlier Census Bureau analysis of commercial voter records
Screenshot of Census Bureau powerpoint slide
The Data: From Registration to Commercial Vendor to Census
Decentralized:
• There is no single national voter registration file (NVRF).
• Voter rolls and access are managed differently in each state. • Different laws and policies regarding data disclosure, list maintenance regulations, etc.
• Potential for significant variation in quality of data.
Acquisition and processing by commercial data vendors:
• Once state files are acquired the data is standardized, cleaned, and processed.
Important to emphasize:
• Measuring the quality of the commercial voter registration files.
• NOT the quality of the voter rolls in local election offices.
• Files do not contain any political party status information.

❗❗❗ So... about that Executive Order on breaking down "data silos." Turns out this year the Census Bureau couldn't get the data it needed from IRS or Medicare in time for the current population estimates.

I mean, why would we need official statistics when a DoorDasher can bring it, lukewarm and possibly missing an item, to our door (and sometimes to our neighbor's door, but who's counting)?

Here's one example on USDA cuts...
Text-dense infographic summarized as follows due to character limit:
Texas farmers and ranchers don't just feed our families, they help feed the world.
Economic losses: These cuts now mean a shortage of 197 critical USDA staff for Texas producers but that's not all because they are also owed millions of dollars in unreimbursed USDA contracts ($2.7B nationwide, $203.4M to 1,845 farms and ranches in Texas alone).
The USDA just lost 1 in 7 people. That's over 15,000 jobs cut.
58% of food safety scientists
1,400 people at APHIS who are key in fighting animal diseases
20% of USDA veterinarians
4,000 folks at USDA's farm production conservation division
3,600 staff from NCRS

Exactly. When what you need is to scan huge volumes of text to help a human find something they need, AI may be helpful (e.g. scanning legislative text) But if you want Truth, using AI is like using a washing machine to do your dishes. I mean, I searched for "child with lemon" & AI gave me this

Also, even with that low immigration projection, and anticipated declines in birth rates, we still will (checks notes) have children in California in 2070. More reason to not buy into the moral panic about falling birth rates.

Update on the ACS Online Community
September 12, 2025

Dear Online Community Members,

Thank you for your participation in the American Community Survey (ACS) Data Users Group Online Community. Since its inception in 2013, the community has grown to over 7,000 members, sharing messages, materials, and announcements related to the ACS. Unfortunately, the U.S. Census Bureau was not able to renew the contract with the Population Reference Bureau (PRB) to maintain the site, and the online community will sunset on September 30, 2025.  We hope you will consider continuing your engagement on PRB's Federal Data Forum Online Community. You can also stay connected to the Census Bureau by subscribing to ACS email updates or contacting the ACS.

Thank you,

Can anyone explain to me why telework rates in 2024-25 are higher than in 2022-23 (according to CPS)? Is it real? (It certainly debunks the RTO narrative.) Is it a methodological shift? Is it labor market shift? (I don't see anything obv in industry or occupation mix but maybe I missed something?)

Tell me you don't understand surveys without telling me you don't understand surveys.
Tweet from DOGE that reads:
Besides the Census itself, the
@USCensusBureau
performs 102 additional surveys costing $2.2 billion, many of them obsolete with the results not being used to drive any action nor even looked at.

The Census Bureau and DOGE are reviewing them one-by-one. So far, 5 wasteful surveys, totaling 493 pages of questions and $16.5M in costs, have been terminated, with questions like:
 - “In your entire life, have you had at least 12 drinks of any kind of alcohol, not counting small tastes or sips?”
 - “Was this MOSTLY regular wine, wine coolers, or fortified wine?”
 - “How frequently do you use the internet in your home?”

I WAS RIGHT. That viral chart from FT does not show compelling proof of the effect of Ozempic/Wegovy. It shows survey noise. Will GLP-1 drugs help? Possibly. But let's not say "mission accomplished" just yet.
Screenshot of report from CDC that reads: "What are the recent trends in obesity and severe obesity in adults? From 2013–2014 through August 2021–August 2023, the age-adjusted prevalence of obesity in adults did not change significantly, while the age-adjusted prevalence of severe obesity increased from 7.7% to 9.7% (Figure 4, Table 4). Changes in the prevalence of obesity and severe obesity between the two most recent survey cycles, 2017–March 2020 and August 2021–August 2023, were not significant." And a chart that shows the trends as described in the text.
