Our Statement on the Green Party passing the motion 'Zionism is Racism' yachad.org.uk/statement-on...
The adoption by the Green Party conference yesterday of the 'Zionism is Racism' motion is a serious and deeply offensive outcome.

An overwhelming majority of British Jews, regardless of their views on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, have now been told by the party that they are racists.

They are not simply being shut out of a political party; they are being asked to dissociate themselves from organised Jewish life in order to pass what is effectively an ‘acceptability test’.Zionism is a fiercely debated and contested word. But for most British Jews, belief in Jewish peoplehood and self-determination is core to their Jewish identity, and this is what they understand to be the basic premise of Zionism.

It is why when Jews attend synagogue they pray facing Jerusalem, and why the concept of ‘Zion’ has been at the heart of Jewish communal life for two millennia.

Telling Jews they are acceptable only if they give up that understanding of collective Jewish identity, is not, as some have sought to explain it away, an attack on a political ideology. It is an attack on Jewish identity. That is why, for most Jews across the political spectrum, yesterday's vote is deeply offensive and alienating. Jews do not need a political party to define Jewish identity on their behalf.

In any other context, a party telling a minority community what its identity may and may not include would be recognised, without controversy, as racist.

To be clear: there is a legitimate conversation to be had about the modern state of Israel, its policies and those of its successive governments, and the impact they have had on the lives and identity of Palestinians.Yesterday's motion is not that conversation. It is a blunt tool that does the opposite of encouraging legitimate debate. It alienates Jews regardless of their views on the conflict or on Israel more widely, and it hands ammunition to those who want to paint all pro-Palestinian activism as illegitimate.

Instead of focusing the discussion on the real issues at hand: dispossession, violence and deep insecurity, the conversation has yet again been reduced to a war of words that will change nothing.

Yachad will continue to work to build the conditions for policy change that makes a real difference on the ground. Yesterday's motion has only made that work harder.

The biggest problem for me is that the GPEW have grown massively recently yet their internal procedures haven't changed to match that. There has always been an issue where a small loud group can completely detail their conferance and that has only got worse recently

I would be happy to give them "the honours of war" if that is what it took to get them back within their own boarder (that's a form of conditional surrender where they can depart peacefully and unmolested in good order with some pomp if desired )

Exactly I do not want any further Russians to die in their pointless war of agression in Ukraine. But at the same time if they continue to attack that fate is inevitable Supposing putin was deposed I would 100% be behind a leader who told the troops to march back to their side of the boarder pronto

Most Palestiniens I'm sure would. If agreement could be reached on a democratic secular state to replace both Israel and Palestine with explicit constitutional protections for both peoples then that of course would be the best outcome possible

It's very hard to criticise one band of genocideal fanatics without being accused of supporting the opposing side of genocideal fanatics! For what it's worth we shouldn't be selling either side weapons!

The biggest issue is that people seem to either support one side or the other absolutely and without question. Thinking their side can do no wrong. Unfortunately the sad reality is that the only thing preventing the Palestinian forces commuting equally vile acts is insufficient resources to do so.

Also he is quite rightly significantly more interested with what's happening with the Jewish community in Brooklyn than what's happening with the Jewish Community in Israel

Absolutely. Mandami's remit on dealing with the ongoing relationship between jewish and Muslim communities extends as far as Brooklyn and the Bronx

They opposed him from the start especially when he made it clear on his campaign that is on the same side as the moderate Jewish population of which NYC has more than most places who typically oppose all forms of terrorism violence and war crimes on both sides And don't think either side are perfect

I'm feeling really upset and a lot of the takes on here (on both sides of the discussion actually) are really painful. Some people really are acting like all pro Palestinian acitivism is inherently antisemitic. I've blocked more followers and mutuals in the last few days than I ever have before.

There are many good causes and there are organisations that focus and lobby on those causes. Had I wanted to focus on this issue I would have joined Your Party. I want the Green Party to focus on green issues.

We do seem over the last few decades to be trying to legislate childhood out of existence. Younger kids are prevented from being independent in any way (and if they are anyway their parents are accused of neglect) And then when they are teens everyone is so frightened they call the police first.

It's how many proposals to actually do something meaningful to reduce overall UK emissions fell because the few eggs that needed to be broken to make the omelette were not seems as acceptable

This has always been a fundamental problem with the GPEW It's how the party for many years could be written off as a home for NIMBY middle classes who didn't want anything new building for good or bad that might come near their cotswold cottage.

This statement would carry a lot more weight were it not for the quite blatant antisemitism that appears to be being entirely tolerated, and Jewish members' concerns dismissed.

But I do follow the green party closely with enough to understand what is happening here.... And to say that I agree with Sian and several other high profile greens on this matter

I am not a member of any political party and have other parts of green policy where I differ from the party line... But the vast majority of those have been argued in good faith and the one I do know the most about has actually changed official policy (albeit too late to matter)

The belief that they should be able to freely practice ethnic cleansing and genocide while seeking territorial expansion by means of violence on the other hand is deeply racist and is also often what is meant when the term zionism is used.

Dan @dasy2k1.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
The view that the Israeli people should have self determination within the boarders of Israel as officially recognised by the UN is not inherently racist yet is in some ways the fundamental definition of zionism....

When there is a case of Both sides having some extremely morally repugnant aspects Or even when both sides have aspects that are considered moral but mutually exclusive (quite a different current affairs matter) There is an issue where you must be the enemy to one or the other side

Dan @dasy2k1.bsky.social · 06/10/2026
Factionism on whatever lines is a real problem On this and many other issues. People have moved towards supporting one viewpoint to the extent that they can't even tolerate the existence of a different viewpoint But that only works when there is a clear moral side

But it's clear at least with the Hamas leadership that it is only their logistical inability to do more that is stopping it becoming a full on genocide... Given the means and opportunity I'm under no delusions that they would hold back

More random indescriminate terrorist attacks than outright genocide at the moment... Although turning a rock concert into a bloodbath killing 350 odd civilians and taking 44 hostage is hardly negligeable.....

The power is very much asymmetric But it dosn't lessen the fact that a music concert suffered an abhorrent attack that killed 378 and took another 44 hostage (of which only 25 survived) And that was only the spark that set off an already tinder box situation

Good on paper but most Hospo workers don't actually have a contract worth the paper it's written on (if such paperwork even exists) They often effectively work full time with no employment protection to speak of and wouldn't be able to afford the 15pm subs anyway

I am deeply saddened the ‘Zionism is Racism’ motion has passed. It doesn't reflect Green principles or my own view. The Green Party has long supported the principle of self-determination, and I stand by our 2024 manifesto commitment of equal rights of Israelis and Palestinians.

The primary issue is that if either side get their way entirely they will undoubtedly commit genocide against the other The only solutions that can possibly work are either A 2 state solution of one form or another Or a 1 state solution that is explicitly neutral and secular

If the amendments had passed, it'd be possible to argue for the motion as a hard stance against the Israeli government and those that enable it. With those amendments having been debated and rejected, I think it's impossible to portray them as anything but a racist party, even if individuals aren't.

Currently only the 2 state solution, flawed as it is, has any chance of creating some semblance of peace. Handing either side absolute control over the region will inevitably result in genocide of the other side

The issue is that both sides are absolutely as bad as each other here. One has a modern western backed military industrial complex that they use to commit war crimes. The other is run by a bunch of rabid terrorists that want to exterminate the first lot. As always the civilians lose

This ^^ The current government of Israel are a hard right ethnosupremicist group who's view is remarkably similar to that espoused by the various parties beginning with R here They have taken a genuine atrocity committed by terrorists as an excuse to double down and actively massacre civilians
