Oddest experience I’ve had more than once is people, almost always men also with kids, assuming that 'cos I’m out doing stuff alone with the #MiniPferds, I’m a divorced weekend dad. Like, lads, if the only reason you’re doing stuff alone with your kids is that you’re divorced, I can see why you are.

But then there are other issues that are still big hangovers from last-seasons issues, that just haven’t improved. The scrum is one. Over-playing between our 22 and 10m lines. A complete absence of a front-foot kicking game… Maintaining Hope but it’s been a grim few weeks.

I guess the only thing I’ll say is that we have a lot of new players to integrate and a lot of them have probably played a lot more minutes than anyone would have wanted. I don’t want to single players out but Benson genuinely doesn’t seem to know where he’s meant to be at times, for example.

Honestly, last season didn’t worry me. A threadbare squad increasingly beset by injuries. Some of the teams we put out against good opposition were scary and Ulster played well in most of those games. Can’t think of any excuses to justify Edinburgh and Munster.

Based on what I've seen from last night, I'm not sure I like the new laws right now but if they make the maul so hard to defend that it ends up stopping teams repeatedly conceding cynical penalties inside their own 10m line, the game will be better for it in the long-run.

Then, as now, I think of Foley’s family, our Munster friends and my own mindset at the time. More than anything, it reminds me of what’s important; and in rugby, insofar as rugby's important at all, it’s not what happens on the pitch but who we watch it with and the friends we make along the way.

My Ma died at the same time as Axel. A week later, home for the funeral, I went to Ravenhill where we sang the Fields of Athenry in honour of Axel. It was emotional. That specific song sung in that specific place meant something deep. Can't believe a decade has passed. Memories just as vivid.
