I like insects and evolution; however, I seem to spend most of my time shouting at a computer. www.genestobehaviour.co.uk/news

Campli et al. present a comprehensive comparative genomic survey of Chelicerata, Myriapoda, Crustacea, and Hexapoda, broadening our understanding of the evolution of the molting genetic toolkit in arthropods. 🔗 doi.org/10.1093/molbev/msag181 📷 @nickybay.bsky.social #societyjournal #evobio
MBE | Evolutionary dynamics of the arthropod molting machinery

A centipede emerges from its old exoskeleton during moulting. The centipede newly exposed body appears soft and delicate, while completing its maturation and hardening process. The empty exoskeleton remains behind preserving the intricate outline of the animal’s body and appendages, giving the impression of looking at two different individuals. Comparative analysis including newly sequenced centipede and millepede species reveal that the moulting molecular toolkit is ancient and shows how gene gains and losses have contributed to its evolutionary flexibility.

New paper! We use rarely produced parthenogenetic males to examine what happens to dosage compensation when it is no longer needed. Surprisingly, we find dosage compensation is maintained in our parthenogenetic stick insects in the absence of selection! www.biorxiv.org/content/10.1...
