Celebrating Two Book Birthdays
It's October 1st, and I'm celebrating two book birthdays. Ten years ago I released Amanda on The Danube: The Sounds of Music. I was in the middle of moving to Spain when I wrote this book. I still don't know how I managed it. My great-granddaugher tells me this is her favourite Amanda Travels book. Twelve-year-old Amanda Ross finds herself on an elegant riverboat with her bestie, Leah, cruising down the beautiful Danube, passing medieval castles, luscious green valleys and charming villages.

Victoria is the capital city of British Columbia, Canada. It is a charming city, named after Queen Victoria, located on Vancouver Island, a ninety-minute ferry ride from the mainland. I love it there and visit whenever I can. Following are some door and building photos from a fun visit with my BFF a few years ago. St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church, a 19th-Century building, features fabulous stained-glass windows.

The view from my window is the friendly neighbour's house and yard. It has its own stories too. The part on the side used to be the donkey stables when donkeys were used to deliver items off the boats coming from the mainland.

Pip: Every good episode starts with a door — sometimes literally, as Darlene Foster's blog will demonstrate today. Mara: We're covering two distinct territories: a short story born from a creative writing challenge, and a book excerpt paired with a review. Let's start with the challenge that turns a photograph of a door into fiction. Creative Writing Challenge Pip: The premise here is elegant — Dan Antion's Thursday Doors Writing Challenge asks writers to pick a submitted door photo and let it spark something.
