This debate is in the debate around solving the healthy. It encourages wider un-derstanding by the people which leads to their having more input into solving their own problems.
Obviously there will be some political trends that will want to see the restoration of capitalism in the GDR and it is here, in the battle of ideas that the influence of the West cannot be underestimated.
This is shown with the fact that the West, through a number of TV and radio stations that can be received in the GDR, promotes its "the grass is greener on the other side of the wall" image.
Now that the Berlin wall is down, people can judge for them-selves. No doubt a number of people have migrated from east to the west and because of their profes-sions may find better job opportu-nities and others may leave for other social reasons.
However, even the west-ern media reports that many of the East Germans who have visited the west have seen the reality of high unemployment, highly priced consumer goods and other social problems in the west.
Closer economic and political ties between East and West Germany could bring closer trade for the GDR with the EEC, which could be a big advantage to the GDR owing to its strong industrial base. This may result in some problems for the GDR because of the unstable manifestations of the capitalist economy, but this proc-ess of internationalisation is irre-versible and more political and economic questions must be solved in more global terms.
NEW CLIMATE
All this can help develop a new political climate in Europe. Even some of the most anti-so-cialist forces in the West who want to undermine socialism recognise this and are quite cautious about new economic relations with the GDR.
We must also remember that the NATO hotshots will be worried about the need to justify the NATO military block, if such in Europe. When we take all of a new political climate is created these facts into consideration we can look to the future with opti-mism. ☆

GDR crisis? What crisis?

Recent events in Eastern Europe reflect the rapid changes taking place. These are partly due to the impact of the technology revolution and partly to the changing political climate in the world.
These changes have at-tracted a lot of media attention which has placed many interpreta-tions on the process of democrati-sation there.
While many people are supporting some changes, for vari-ous reasons, the most hostile of the media barons are raving on about the "death of communism". They are particularly zealous about the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) which is supposed to have the highest standard of living of all the socialist countries.
This should not be seen as the death of socialism. The proc-ess of democratisation in the GDR has wide implications. There is no doubt that perestroika in the So-viet Union has had its impact on the other socialist countries, but it seems that the forms of change in each of the socialist countries re-flect a specifically historical de-velopment of each of those countries, while revealing mistakes made by mechanically trying to build models of socialism.
Rapid changes have been brought about by mass demonstra-tions demanding more democrati-sation and fewer restrictions on travel to the west. This shows the democratic nature of socialism and contrasts with the nature of capi-talist society which excludes the majority of people from determin-ing their destiny. A good example of this is the growing unemploy-ment in the West.
ANTI-FASCIST SOCIETY
While not forgetting about the great achievements of build-ing the anti-fascist society in the GDR after the second world war, the communist and progressive forces will have to work harder to win the respect and confidence of the people rather than automati-cally claiming to represent them. In the course of more fully involv-ing the people, more varied politi-cal ideas and notions will emerge country's problems.
