Photo of Barabara Eden as Jeannie from her TV sitcom I Dream of Jeannie.

A weird American sitcom from 1965 that featured an astronaut who found a magic lamp with a genie in it. Barbara Eden plays the genie. The astronaut “marries” the genie and forces her to pretend to be a human woman. She has a hard time not calling him “master” in front of others.

It’s like Bewitched seasoned with orientalism and the military industrial complex.

So much subtext.

Shame on @npr.org and @nprextra.bsky.social for platforming Tucker Carlson and immediately accepting his ridiculous framing of Trump’s illegal war on Iran as a Democratic project. Listen as Steve Inskeep credulously laps up Tucker’s crocodile tears and endless lies. Or don’t.

MAHA promises to fight big pharma. It promises to give them clean food that won’t make them sick. It promises them a sense of control. And it doesn’t call them ignorant rubes. It’s too bad that MAHA is a pack of lies. That it’s going to make us all sicker and poorer.

People are going to say the usual shit about rubes voting against their self interest, blah blah blah. The thing is MAHA is popular because rural communities have been hollowed out and fucked over by the healthcare industry. They’ve been injured by pesticides. They want that shit to stop.

I work in tech and very few of us are the stereotypical tech lord dickheads. But the ones who are make an outsized impact. For example, I’ve had to persuade a few coworkers that eugenics is a bad idea.🤦 Many, many more are nice, wholesome frustrated musicians who work in tech to pay for toys.

It is a pretty terrible version of Foundation but a pretty good space opera. I say it’s bad Foundation because it puts individual heroism at the center of events rather than the forces of history. Which is what the whole story is about. Explicitly. Still worth watching.

Honey, it’s not just bee vomit; it’s bee vomit *concentrate*. Why settle for thin soupy vomit? It’s so unsatisfying once you’ve experienced the amazing flavor of vomit that has been lovingly dried to form a smooth syrup so it could be enjoyed any time. Vomit concentrate, accept no substitutes.

Some of them were terrible. Others served up solid diner fare. You never really knew what you were in for. I think that’s why fast food chains dominated. The food won’t be the best, but it was not going to be the worst. Food poisoning sucks anytime; but on a road trip, it’s a special hell.

There used to be a ton of restaurants that had signs like this. Very common in the 70s, and dwindling into the 80s. My sister and I had a running joke on road trips that they were all part of a single chain. I don’t know it for a fact, but I’d bet it was actually the chains that ate them.

I think that’s part of why there is such a college vs no-college political divide. It’s less a matter of class and more a matter of whether you learned anything other than the pure propaganda we learn in K-12.

And that hurts when need the US to be the best, the freest country ever. How can you not be racist and yet be so proud of a country that is so riddled with racism? It’s far easier to shut those thoughts down and pretend that they aren’t real. That America is the best and freest nation.

It means facing the inescapable truth that the only way to understand our history is to acknowledge that white supremacy is at the core of the whole project. It touches everything from our politics to our geography. It’s in our Constitution and national anthem.
151
DaoToaD @daotoad.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
We still want to believe in the nobility of the Southern Planter and the gentle slave owner who cared for his charges. That feeds our national myth. Moving past those romanticized notions is hard. It forces you to look at unexamined racism in yourself.
120
DaoToaD @daotoad.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
And we are entirely unprepared, emotionally or intellectually, to accept that real gutter racism is still a force in this country, that we have a persistent problem.
131
DaoToaD @daotoad.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Add this mess to the propaganda that we learn in school about how great America is, that glosses over slavery and genocide, that erases class struggle, and elevates individual heroes over movements. Education that is uncritical of Manifest Destiny and that the Civil War was about states rights.

DaoToaD @daotoad.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
Without some education and a lot of patience from friends, I would have stayed ignorant. This ignorance makes people susceptible to manipulation. They fear being labeled racist, they want deeply not to be racist, while doing racist things. This creates a powerful cognitive dissonance.
111
DaoToaD @daotoad.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
I was raised by well meaning white liberals to think that only racists, like the shouting guy, talk or think about race. That left me ignorant enough to think that colorblindness was a good thing. It left me without the tools to progress in my understanding of reality.
110
DaoToaD @daotoad.bsky.social · 18/09/2026
The rest agree that racism is bad, but most don’t understand what it is and haven’t really tried to. To them it’s that angry shouting guy in movies where a white guy helps some Black people during the civil rights movement. It’s literal Nazis and Klan members. And nothing more.

Horrible mayonnaise abuse to retch at.
An old magazine advertisement for best foods mayonnaise.

It feature three recipes for gelatin based salads that contain mayonnaise. They are all a bad pink color. One is shaped like a fish.

One of the recipes is titled “Shrimp Mold”. Another vintage mayo ad. This one dates from the 40s and is called “Welcome Home Salad”. I assume this was meant to welcome returning soldiers. Imagine coming home from the horrors of war to be served canned pear halves slathered with cottage cheese and mayonnaise.

You showed up in my “it’s a terrible day to have eyes” feed. And mayonnaise abuse is indeed horrible to behold. Like putting mayonnaise in coffee or on Jello. So many aspic “salads” were serves slathered with mayo. It’s best not to look.

Good mayo (Kewpie) can be good on the right grilled sandwich, but IMO butter is usually better. Instead of a nice butter flavor you get a mild egg flavor with hints of whatever other seasoning is in the mayo. The flavor is subtle. Try it on the heel of your next loaf. Then if it sucks, no biggie.

DaoToaD @daotoad.bsky.social · 17/09/2026
The mayo on the outside doesn’t turn into a slimy mess like it would on the inside. Mayo is mostly oil with a little egg in it. The small amount of egg kind of disappears the oil fries the bread.

Looks delicious. Pozole is the best. It’s probably my number one comfort food. I always make it the way my mom does, with pig feet and smoked pork hock. It’s not traditional outside my family, but the smoked meat is goood. Homemade pozole is fantastic. With beans from a pot not a can? Heaven.

Assuming they really were not used, I wonder why. Was it fuel choice? Or maybe the cost, size, and/or complexity of the mechanism? Maybe it was just the generalized availability of a source of fire to start the lamp with. 🤷 Or maybe it was a popular feature and I suck at searching. Fun question.
000
DaoToaD @daotoad.bsky.social · 15/09/2026
I think the biggest difference is the integrated striker. The mechanism from a wheellock gun could have used to light a lamp, assuming the fuel was volatile enough for a spark to reliably work A short search didn’t turn up any 19th century oil or kerosene lamps that had strikers.
