Dan Shive @danshive.bsky.social · 7hParks and Recreation reinforces the fact that I’m not against heterosexual couples in fiction. I just want them to be good couples, and a lot of shows like to write heterosexual couples as adversaries who always argue, seem to hate each other, and should probably get super divorced 😬 2410
Dan Shive @danshive.bsky.social · 7hI also like the Tearmoon Empire “villainess” who is NOT a sweetheart, but is often good for selfish reasons. I love this because I will forever insist that goodness to others benefits ourselves, too, and she demonstrates that. Dan Shive @danshive.bsky.social · 7hWHICH is why I don’t like the twist of the heroine becoming a villainess in place of the sweetheart villainess. I’m there for the good vibes! I don’t want the tragedy of the corrupted otome protagonist or whatever! 😭 2280
Dan Shive @danshive.bsky.social · 7hI gravitate towards villainess and saint manga / anime for the same basic reasons: I like a protagonist being genuinely kind and trying to help people. Which sounds weird for the villainess genre, but the irony is the villainess is almost always a sweetheart.static.klipy.comCatarina Claes: Anime Girl Eating DonutALT: Catarina Claes: Anime Girl Eating Donut 3461
Dan Shive @danshive.bsky.social · 8hI tend to gravitate towards them because I like the idea of a healer helping people, but there are a lot of repeating plot elements. The Secret Saint has the benefit of being a bit goofy and different in its premise. 000
Dan Shive @danshive.bsky.social · 8hI’m mostly familiar with it because of a bunch of stories with “saint” in the title (most of which are about women with magic healing powers who aren’t appreciated or acknowledged for various reasons right up until they are). Latest one’s pretty different in its setup (A Tale of The secret Saint) 100
Dan Shive @danshive.bsky.social · 12hHang on, I think I’m mistaken about this. It SOUNDS like they’re saying “sage,” but I think that’s a coincidence. What they’re saying is 聖女, which sounds like “sage-oh,” but apparently means “holy woman.” 170
Dan Shive @danshive.bsky.social · 12h(There are a couple Sage / Saint stories similar enough that I jumble them in my memory, but there’s also plenty doing their own things enough that they do stand out.) 160
Dan Shive @danshive.bsky.social · 12hFor further clarification, there is an entire genre around sages / saints. They tend to be young women who are super special awesome healers who are for some reason or another mistreated by their own people and find appreciation either elsewhere or later on. There’s some Villainess genre overlap. 270
Dan Shive @danshive.bsky.social · 13hI scheme to have text in an upcoming sketchbook, and needed to determine the size for it to look right. This involved… MATH ⛈️ #egscomics 140
Dan Shive @danshive.bsky.social · 14hLet it be known that I was perfectly willing to give the movie Susan and Jay are going to see a sensible name. The problem is too many things exist, and it’s a silly movie anyway, so now its name is ridiculous. #egscomics 4170
Dan Shive @danshive.bsky.social · 15hSage (person, not a plant) in anime tends to get localized as saint. Saint works fine, but I don’t know why it’s so frequently chosen over Sage. Maybe it‘s simply perceived as localizing its meaning better? Maybe ending on a “T” is thought to sound better? 🤔 9290

Dan Shive @danshive.bsky.social · 06/10/2026I can do most of it, but there are some letters I sort of just "whoosh" through without them looking right. I think I'll be able to get in the groove of it again with just a little reminding. 010

Dan Shive @danshive.bsky.social · 06/10/2026I think the barrier to that is not having a template in Procreate set up for that, or any of those other apps. This suggests I should try out a template (and possibly other apps) and see if it’s something I’d realistically stick with. 120

Dan Shive @danshive.bsky.social · 06/10/2026If space-faring, I’m thinking REALLY smart in ways humans would find baffling. Like, “you need computers for that, how cute” smart. Not super smart about everything, but there’d be things about them that we’d consider beyond super-human. And yet they *literally* can’t learn to read. 9110
Dan Shive @danshive.bsky.social · 06/10/2026To clarify, I understand how learned and not instinctive reading is, but we humans do have the capability to learn it using what we have. I am suggesting an alien species that doesn’t have anything like that to work with in spite of their intelligence. 2171
Dan Shive @danshive.bsky.social · 06/10/2026I’m not suggesting it is, but we are capable of learning to do it using what we have. I am considering an alien species that does not have that. 010
Dan Shive @danshive.bsky.social · 06/10/2026What if powerful, super intelligent species that can’t read? Not as in “never learned,” but as in their brains literally can’t do it for some reason. 14241
Dan Shive @danshive.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Note to self: Things like donuts can be occasional “in addition to” treats with an actual breakfast, but they cannot *replace* breakfast. You get hungry again way too quickly. 2160
Dan Shive @danshive.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Past me apparently highlighted what I meant by this! ”Genre savvy” might not be the exact right way to put it, but I think it fits in a general sense. (The ”bad at directions” was something Ashley suggested because of characters like Ryoga from Ranma 1/2) 0241
Dan Shive @danshive.bsky.social · 06/10/2026I also think it’s possible our minds will look at the text that’s there and try to pull autocomplete nonsense. Instead of what you’re thinking, part of your mind might go into general next word prediction mode. Again, not a mind scientist. I could be COMPLETELY wrong. 040
Dan Shive @danshive.bsky.social · 06/10/2026I suggest this because I think looking at the words as you type can disrupt the flow of what you’re writing. your language centers are both looking at what’s there, and what you’re thinking of. They’re potentially competing, not working in tandem. Or not. I’m not a mind scientist. 130
Dan Shive @danshive.bsky.social · 06/10/2026When stuck on writing something, I think it helps to look away from the text itself. This is easier on a keyboard (as in a literal, physical keyboard), as I don’t need to look at it while typing. Granted, I’ll need to go back and check for typos, and should do that frequently, but still. 270
Dan Shive @danshive.bsky.social · 06/10/2026I think it be important that she’s not confidently right, either, and potentially as surprised as anyone else when right. 1270
Dan Shive @danshive.bsky.social · 06/10/2026Something I want to bring back is Ashley being right due to genre savvyness. It hasn’t come up much, but she correctly guessed Andrea had a bad sense of direction, and that Nanase couldn’t reach Elliot with her fairy doll spell at one point because Elliot was Cheerleadra (so stuff like that). 3440
