And this dust survives through the death of ages. It sleeps in deep layers of mud — black, red & umber; it sleeps under the wet pelt of a November hill where long grass is the colour of fox; it sleeps deep under lakes; twelve metres down it survives, old & tough as love. Moya Cannon ‘Pollen’

This is what I actually wrote, which is quite different from the headline: 👇 “In the grand scheme of guarding Ireland’s interests in a troubled world, the truth, whatever it may be, probably doesn’t matter all that much. An even par round will be a respectable result in such blustery conditions.”

There will be relief if Trump leaves Clare with the impression that ‘the Irish really like me’. In the grand scheme of things, the truth doesn’t matter

What happens next Is undiminished for having happened once, Twice, ten, a thousand times before. Who cares if all the music that transpires Is the fall of grit or dry seeds through a cactus? You are like a rich man entering heaven Through the ear of a raindrop. Listen now again. Seamus Heaney

been on the radar since it came out and finally found a copy in the UK a few weeks ago. I’ve read a lot of Ulysses books, academic/non, doubted this could add much. (Also been reading the novel itself on/off for 40 years). It’s a belter — absolutely worth your time. Yes @danmulhall.bsky.social

European Parliament @europarl.europa.eu · 11/07/2026
720 Members and 27 EU countries. Wait, so how are Member seats distributed fairly?   By population of course.   Along with ensuring that smaller nations have a minimum of 6 seats, and larger nations have a maximum of 96.   Happy World Population Day!

Infographic titled "How the EU's population is represented in the European Parliament." A stylised map of Europe is shown using coloured dots, with each dot representing one of 720 European Parliament seats. Countries are colour-coded and their seat allocations are: Germany 96, France 81, Italy 76, Spain 61, Poland 53, Romania 33, Netherlands 31, Belgium 22, Czechia 21, Sweden 21, Portugal 21, Greece 21, Hungary 21, Austria 20, Bulgaria 17, Denmark 15, Finland 15, Slovakia 15, Ireland 14, Croatia 12, Lithuania 11, Slovenia 9, Latvia 9, Estonia 7, Cyprus 6, Luxembourg 6, Malta 6. Text explains that to ensure political diversity, each country has a minimum of 6 MEPs and a maximum of 96 MEPs. The European Parliament logo appears in the bottom right corner.
