Little known fact: the Guardian Angels evolved from a group Curtis Sliwa and his coworkers started in 1977 called the Magnificent 13. They chose the red and white color scheme for visibility since they patrolled at night, and the berets and t-shirts for a casual but vaguely militarized appearance.

The Guardian Angels technically started in 1977 as the Magnificent 13, they already had the look down when they reorganized as the Angels in ‘79.
