Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope Launch Credit: NASA/John Kraus images.nasa.gov/details/NHQ2... #Roman 🔭🧪
A SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket with NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Telescope on board is seen transiting the sun during launch from Launch Complex 39A, Sunday, Aug. 30, 2026, at NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida. The Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, named after the agency’s first chief astronomer, will survey billions of stars and galaxies with a field of view far larger than Hubble’s, helping scientists study dark energy, exoplanets and the evolution of the universe.

We can't be 100% certain we've got the right star — yet. Confirming this will need continued multiwavelength monitoring, especially with JWST, to track how the system evolves. This will be a benchmark system to observe and test theories for years to come!

Why does this matter? SN Ia progenitors are a 90-year open question: white dwarf + what companion? Direct imaging like this is one of the only ways to test it empirically, instead of just modeling from the explosion itself.
JWST NIRCam and MIRI imaging of a candidate progenitor for SN 2026sqf. This is a first SN Ia progenitor identified by Webb (potentially).

Danny Milisavljevic @danmil.bsky.social · 18/08/2026
The SED of our candidate points to a huge, cool, dusty star R~800 solar radii, T~2000K with carbon-rich dust. That radius is enormous for a normal AGB star, but matches what common-envelope models predict for a WD spiraling into an AGB companion.

SN 2026sqf was found not by a survey pipeline but by amateur astronomer P. Wiggins, in a nearby, extremely well-imaged galaxy. This gives us years of archival JWST/HST data to search for the star that exploded. That's incredibly rare for this class. Our paper includes his discovery image.

New paper! We report JWST pre-explosion imaging of a dusty AGB-like source at the site of a rare, nearby Type Ia-CSM supernova, SN 2026sqf, in NGC 3310. Likely a carbon-rich companion feeding an exploding white dwarf. A first for Webb. We may be wrong, but I doubt it! arxiv.org/abs/2608.13321

Light from supernova 1987A reached Earth #OTD in 1987. The Hubble space telescope captured this spectacular image for the 30 year anniversary in 2017. 🧪 🔭 ⚛️ Credits: NASA, ESA, R. Kirshner (Harvard-Smithsonian CfA, Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation), M. Mutchler and R. Avila (STScI)
Supernova 1987A is located in the centre of the image amidst a backdrop of red, blue, and orange stars. A bright pink and red ring around the central region of the exploded star is composed of material ejected by the star about 20 000 years before the actual explosion took place. The supernova is surrounded by red and orange gaseous clouds. The color of these clouds represents the glow of hydrogen gas.

The ice breaker question I often ask at nerdy parties is this: What code or latex editor do you use? My answer: vi for most editing. Emacs for lengthy code and most latex documents. Answers involving web browsers are hard to accept. I love when someone brings up something random like nano.

This hits hard!!! I recently edited a latex file offline using emacs, and it was so much swifter and less cumbersome than Overleaf. It’s unfortunate that many students know only write using online tools.

I haven't seen research though I'd guess it exists, but handwriting letters *extensively* - as in 18th & 19th centuries- seems to produce a critical mass of great writers & thinkers. Jefferson's correspondence with Adams, for example. Maybe it's quill pens, which slow down writing to thinking speed.

Yes to this also! Everyone has different strategies to learn. I’m reminded of a saying from my dad: “If you do nothing, you know nothing.” I can read all about, e.g., basketball, but unless I’m on the court practicing shots, I’m not going to improve my game.

Same reason why I tell students to consider writing notes instead of typing them in class: numerous studies show that actively synthesizing information (a necessity from slower writing) is superior to more extensive but passive notetaking when it comes time to recall and interpret content.
